We stayed in the Dei mellini in 2009.

All in all this was a clean hotel, in what we consider a good location.
It is not completely in the heart of the city, rather about 15 minutes walk from most attractions. We made it to the vatican in about 15 minutes.
The hotel is well maintained and the breakfast was what you would expect - cereal, croissants, fruit juice, cheese and ham etc.

Rome itself is a beautiful city with some fantastic sights to see. the restaurants were lovely and i am very pleased i went.

I would however pre warn that the amount of beggers, confidence tricksters, and general people trying to extort money from you for just about everything prom roses to photo's is incredibley high, and incredibly annoying.
I have travelled to many cities and have never know it this bad.

Perhaps we were just unlucky.

My wife and I stayed three nights at this hotel during Holy Week in April. The staff is friendy, helpful, and speak English. I am not the kind of person that gets upset about people not speaking English, however being fluent in Spanish I can usually use either of the two to communicate. Italian is another story, so it was real helpful.
This is a very nice hotel, clean luxurious room, in a quiet safe neighborhood of mixed commercial, hotel, cafe, and apartment houses. Close to the river, and close to the bridges that cross over to the tourist areas. While this hotel is not located right in the middle of the tourist areas, the benefit is that it is very quiet and peaceful. The walk to the Vatican is about the same distance as the walk to the sights. It seemed a bit of a hike late at night, but we never felt unsafe or like it was overwhelmingly far to get back. We did take a bus to the colliseum and Roman forum area but it was easy to catch at the corner. The hotel staff were real helpful in guiding us. I would recommend this place for someone that is willing to be slightly off center stage in exchange for a little more peace and quiet. The price was also a little better for what you get than those near the monuments. Oh, the beds are of the very firm posterpedic foam type, which we liked but may be a matter of taste. I would definately go back to Hotel Mellini, it's a gem.

My sister and I really enjoyed this hotel. When we arrived the staff made us feel welcome and throughout our three nights there they were very helpful in their attitude and advice. The rooms, while not huge, were certainly spacious enough and the bathrooms very good. The rooms were quiet and the breakfast was good also. The only slight negatives were that the rooms were too warm and the airconditioning was not turned on (however, having said that, it was unseasonably warm in Rome for March for the days we were there) and the mattresses were quite hard. This seems common in lots of hotels who seem to equate a supportive mattress with a hard mattress. But neither of these small niggles overshadowed our stay and the helpfulness and friendliness of the staff more than made up for these. The hotel is within walking distance of anywhere in Rome. It is on the same side of the river as the Vatican which is about 10-15 minutes walk away. The Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navonna are also both about 10-15 minutes walk back across the river. We bought a "hop-on, hop-off" bus ticket for two days but only used it for an hour on the first day. After that we just walked everywhere - so my advice is not to bother if you are able and fit enough to walk for the duration. Just do a bit of tourist research before your trip. Going on maps.google and planning some walking "routes" beforehand, and using the hotel maps provided meant that everything was easy to get to by foot. Oh, to save yourself time on a tight schedule, visit some churches early in the morning (7-7.30am) - check opening times beforehand. This meant that we had more time to queue for the other things like the Vatican!

Double Delux Room on 4th floor,very good size.Excellent location with friendly staff,lovely continental breakfast,however water suppplied to make tea never very hot! visited most places on foot, once we found our bearings it was fairly easy to find your way around using a map.Have already recommended this hotel to friends.
