On our second trip to Rome we chose to stay at the Hotel Mascagni and it was a great decision. The location placed us near the center of Rome and all modes of transportation. The staff was extremely helpful and wanting to please. We arrived before check in and were escorted to the dining area to relax and enjoy a cup of cappuccino, which was expertly prepared. Our upgraded junior suite was immaculate, spacious and comfortable. The breakfast was very substantial. The American Catholic Church is one block away. The hotel gave us great dining suggestions. On our next trip to Rome we will definitely be staying at the Hotel Mascagni.

I had researched many hotels in Rome and booked this hotel because of the many positive reviews I had read on Trip Advisor and for its location. It is only a 5 to 10-minute walk from Roma Termini, just past Piazza della Repubblica. We felt very safe in the area where this hotel is located. We arrived earlier than check-in time and the concierge gave us a complimentary beverage and newspaper until our room was ready - very thoughtful and welcomed by us after pulling our suitcases from the train station. We had asked for a balcony room upon booking and were very pleased to have received one when we checked in. The concierge spoke good English and were very knowledgeable and helpful in locating and booking a particular tour for us. Our room and bathroom were very clean and the bed nice and firm. We thought our room and the hotel nicely decorated, our room a good size for Europe and we couldn't hear the traffic below us. The air-conditioning worked well as did the satellite tv and in-room safe (mini-bar fridge could have been colder). The lift is small as in other hotels in Europe. There is a very good supermarket approx 10 minutes walk away and double-decker, hop-on-hop off tour bus stops at Piazza della Repubblica and also near Roma Termini. Hotel Mascagni is well located with helpful staff and we would definitely stay here again should we return to Rome!

Pros:
-Great location to visit Rome's main cultural sites. You are near the subway, Termini, a tour organizer's pick-up point and can easily walk to reach different parts of the city.
-The room was larger than expected (especially after having stayed at a closet-sized room in Paris!)
-Breakfast selection was good. The daily pastries were delicious!
-The hotel was nicely decorated with modern artwork
-The staff was helpful, efficient and could speak good English

Cons:
-The hotel has some technical issues with their internet service. Wireless is supposedly available throughout the hotel but did not work from our room on the upper floor (even when standing at the "Wi-Fi Spot" signs in the hallway). We had to sit in the hallways of the lower floors in order to catch the weak signal. I would not recommend you to stay there if you are on business and must have stable internet access in your room throughout your stay. The front desk's response was that wi-fi is not stable as it is provided free of charge... We almost considered subscribing to the St. Regis' wi-fi as the signal was strong enough to reach our room from across the road!
-Windows were double-glazed but noise could be an issue due to the busy cobbled road in front of the hotel. Maybe you could request a room facing the quiet side of the building if you are sensitive to noise.
-The shower did not drain properly. The pressure was really variable and made taking a shower a challenge on some days.
-Bed mattresses were hard and the pillows felt a bit worn and flimsy.

This hotel is situated in P de Republica where there is a Metro station and a bus stop to take you directly down into the centre of the city. On our first day we walked easily from the hotel to the Pantheon passing the Quirnale the Trevi Fountains and many other wonderful sites en route. It is therefore in a good spot. If money was no object then I would probably chose to stay closer to the Pantheon.

Everything about the hotel is very narrow from the reception area to the lift and the corridors. This just adds to its charm. It has obviously been refurbished fairly recently to a high standard and housekeeping is excellent. Our room was very small but spotlessly clean. If we had been in a resort and stayed there then it would have driven me mad but we were out all day and therefore spent very little time there. The mattress was quite hard and the pillows were very thin. The bathroom again was immaculately clean but tiny. The showere door could only be partial opened beacuse of where the bidet was placedand and a large person with a big stomach would have had great difficulty getting in. The buffet breakfast was good without being great.

My only disappointment was the recommendations which the concierge made for dinner. Both restaurants were below average and one- La Matriciana was downright dreadful.

We stayed here with our two children, 10 and 13. The hotel offered us a room with a large bed (made by pushing together two single beds) and two single beds rolled in for the kids. Although the additional beds made the room a little tight we appreciated the accommodation (some hotels will refuse to do this). A bellman greeted us promptly and took our bags for us since the room wasn't ready yet (we arrived at noon, three hours before normal check-in but they had us in after we returned from lunch). The front desk was staffed with several very efficient men who doubled as concierges. They provided maps of the city with suggestions for meals and sightseeing. All were very helpful, and although I speak enough Italian for travel purposes, they all spoke very good English. Breakfast was served in a very pleasant suite of rooms. Aside from one mistake (putting out a bowl of raw eggs rather than hard-boiled), the staff there was very pleasant, efficient, and professional. The room were well cared for and kept clean. The hotel is steps away from Piazza della Repubblica, which has a Metro stop on the A line. However, it seems to be a more business oriented area and restaurants within walking distance were scarce. We did eat at one good restaurant for lunch for gave up on the area for the rest of our meals. They have free wi-fi access, and offer use of a computer for something like 4 euros an hour.
