The hotel is fairly well located in the business district of Rome, near the main train station. It's an old hotel, but the rooms have been upgraded, the bathrooms are very nice, marble, etc. The staff were somewhat friendly and helpful, just average.
The interior decor is garage sale fodder. I'm sure the management would like to think it's antique, but it's more like they salvaged the stuff from a rubbish heap. Especially the mattresses, the worst. I've stayed in many hotels in my 49 years, but have NEVER slept on a worse mattress, even in cheap hotels costing a fraction of this rate. It was deplorable. I checked our friends room and they had the same lousy, soft, thin, sinking in the middle mattresses. It was like sleeping on a cheap roll away cot, or fold out couch. I'd rather have slept tied to the rack in the Tower of London than another night on that mattress.
The morning breakfast was far below average also for Italy.
Overall, I could tolerate the half hearted staff, the second hand interior decor, and the marginal breakfast, but NEVER again on the mattress. It's an absolute deal breaker.
Find somewhere else to stay until they wake up and buy new and better mattresses.
