The Hotel Emmaus is situated perfectly to the Vatican. It takes minutes to walk to the middle of St. Peter's Square right in front of the Basillica. The rooms are average and the hotel is old but they have made it clean and the price reflects the authenticity. There is a fantastic coffee/gelato shop right next door and the street life is fantastic and busy. You will feel like you are in Roma.
Words of warning! Restaurants in the area are very very close but a word of warning on the ones that cater to the tourists, they add on everything to your bill and run it up. Bread, a la carte courses, encouraging you to get side dishes...this is the way they operate. Tonight's incident at the restaurant Postiglione across the street claimed that the phone lines were down and we had to pay cash vs credit card. The waiter said for us to use the nearby ATM machine for the cash...Huh?? The phone lines were down in the city of Rome??? He wanted us to pay cash instead of CC so they could get reduced fees. They pull this on all the tourists. The restaurants will be tourist abusers, so you are better off going in the pizzerias several blocks away from the Vatican wall and into the neighborhoods that cater to the locals and aren't out to rip the tourists.
Anything within the view of the wall ( a few exceptions) will take advantage of you. Just a word of warning to keep an eye out for these places and don't be all trusting.
