We weren't sure what to expect because of mixed reviews, We found the hotel to be exactly what we were looking for in Rome. The staff was friendly and helpful. The hotel had a museum feel about it that was beautiful. The location was a block from St Peters Bascilica and convienent to public transportation and walking to other attractions. The breakfast was good. The mattresses were a little hard but after a long day it still felt good.
It was very peaceful to be able to walk up to St Peters square at night when it was empty and just sit there and take it in.

One of best location (especially for first time in Rome and interest in Vatican), historic building, however, if arriving early, advisable not take the "available" ready rooms, or, you might be in attic like rooms (roomy and clean) with small high windows, taking away half the beauty of location.
Most staff greatly helpful, particularly a "special Stefania" who is (in my opinion) a great asset to the hotel! Difficulties using Wi-Fi, but two computers at reception can be helpful.
Restaurant on premise very good, great staff and beautiful location overlooking parklike courtyard. Some of public rooms just stunning! My only regret is to have taken the "available" early rooms! Would have loved to gaze out the windows onto the Vatican cupolas. A definite return for us.

We found this hotel to be perfect for our exploration of Rome. It was a short walk to St. Peters, Sistine Chapel, quaint restaurants with good food, and the tour buses stopped right across the street. During our stay I received word that my Mother had passed away. The staff was so gracious and tried everything in their power to help us cancel hotels and tours for the next two weeks of our trip. They went above and beyond what they had to do to help us. So--if we ever return to Rome, we will head for Hotel Columbus. With a very nice hotel, good breakfast, clean rooms, and gracious, helpful staff--what more could we want??

We spent two nights at the Columbus Hotel in early October. We were fortunate to have a room overlooking the street and could peer out the window and see St Peters and the piazza. The public rooms are magnificant and although the furnishings and decor of our room were outdated they were perfectly adequate and the bed was the most comfortable of our stay in Italy. The breakfast was the usual Italian basic buffet. The bonus of the area is everyone leaves the area by evening and it is very quiet, even the church bells didn't start on Sunday until about 8.00am. I had previously stayed at the hotel 40 years ago whilst travelling alone using "Europe on $5 Day" - no ensuite then.
