A lovely looking hotel, very close to the Vatican and a good walk into the centre of town. We were very impressed when we arrived at the Columbus's grand entrance and reception, but the staff are a bit flat and disinterested to be honest, we didn't find any great hospitality about the place. We had 2 rooms and both were a disappointment. When the doors to the lift opened on our floor everything looked a bit tired and the rooms were worse. This is an old building steeped in history but one that needs a good revamp throughout. Our rooms were basic with a tatty bathroom. On two seperate days we were without hot water for a few hours. When we called reception they weren't very helpful but the problem got fixed eventually. The cleanliness of the rooms wasn't up to scratch and everything just seemed a bit grotty. One night it was chilly so we put the air-conditioning unit on to warm up our room. This, we think, brought back to life some dormant mosquitos as that night we became a tasty meal - something we didn't expect in October!
Breakfast was in a very grand room, but cold buffet style and slow service on the tea and coffee front. We didn't eat dinner there, we went over the road, through an archway where there's a street full of restaurants.
Rome itself, as you would expect is fantastic, but we would stay elsewhere next time. If you want to be in the hub-bub then this hotel is too far out of the centre but still a nice location if your main reason for visiting Rome is to spend time at the Vatican.
