After arriving at their partner Hotel Augustea we were told the airconditioner wasn't working and were taken to Hotel Patria. We were tolerant of the problem but the room we were given was dirty; the bathroom had not been cleaned and the fridge had lumps of food in it. This problem was soon rectified but then we found the flush in the toilet wouldn't work; my husband could manage it but I couldn't. In the evening we discovered the light switch in the bathroom was broken and showered in semi-darkness. It took us the whole week we were there to have both these problems fixed. They glued the light switch twice (it was dangerous and it broke again both times) before replacing it.
Breakfast was poor, the worst we had in our month in Italy, but would have been better if we could have got a seat without a long wait on the stairwell. Some days I gave up and picked up a couple of rolls and took them back to the room. The room was dark and had a tiny window facing a nearby wall but the bed was comfortable and the airconditioning was good. And the lift was fine on the days it was working. The hotel is in a good position.

Treat this hotel as the title suggests and you'll love the Patria. OK, so the breakfast seems a bit scrooge-like and the layout of the rooms and elevator have been under planned, but our three night stay was comfortable and friendly.

My wife, my son and I visited Rome for three days and managed to see 70% of the main attractions in the City. This is partly due to the location of the hotel (when walking) and the wonderful, efficient, clean and prompt Metro service in Rome. As you can read in other reviews, the location of this hotel is so convenient, we were glad not to have wasted money on a larger hotel simply because of it's central position.

The hotel itself is far enough along Via Torino to get away from the traffic noise coming from Via Nazionale even staying in a 'front' room. All staff we dealt with were friendly, accomodating and helpful (especially as my Italian isn't 100%)

Bad points: The bath was about three foot long. The elevator doesn't go to all floors. Limited amenities in the room (i.e. TV, hairdryer, radio etc)

Good points: Cheaper than most. Excellent location. Friendly staff. Clean. Comfy beds.

Just what you need if you use a hotel as somewhere to wash and sleep as opposed to live in for your stay.

If this is a 3 star hotel, I'd hate to see what 2 stars looks like!

As we walked into the hotel we were overwhelmed by a strong and over powering odor lingering in the lobby. We soon discovered that it was B.O. from the bell boy! Things got much worse when we discovered that the elevator only went up to the 4rth floor, and so we had to lug our heavy suitcases up the stairs, to get to our room on the 5th floor. The room was ok...I mean I didn't exactly expect chocolates on our pillows, but I did expect the basics, like towels for examples. But there were no towels! Instead we had to dry ourselves with what appeared to be over sized tea cloths!

Breakfast was horrendous! In fact, after the first time, we never went back. There was one kind of really bad cereal, like corn flakes or something. A bowl of nasty canned fruit, not even fresh fruit. No toast or bagels or anything, instead they had stale dinner rolls. A plate of ham and cheese slices. And stale croissants.

After traveling to Florence and Venice, we came back to Hotel Patria in Rome, for the last part of our trip. This time we were lucky to get a room on the 4rth floor, so we could take our luggage all the way up on the elevator. Unfortunately that came with a price. The shower in the new room kept getting clogged, and every morning we had to shower with our feet in 2 inches of water.

This was probably the crappiest hotel I've ever stayed at, and for that price, would not recommend it to anyone!

We stayed at Hotel Patria for the first and last part of the stay of our trip to Rome. The first part we were put on the 5th floor. The room was small but had all the basic needs. It would have been nice to have fluffy towels rather than tea-cloth like ones but that was the least of my complaints. The hotel could have been cleaner, more updated. The location was great for it was close to termini station so we were able to walk with our luggage with no problems. The hotel was a bit of a challenge to find at first because it is located on a small side street and the map off the hotel website isn't clear because the road names in Rome are small and hidden on the side of the wall. Once it was found it was hard to believe we missed it in the first place. It was close to the metro and we walked to all the tourist sites including the colliseum, trevi fountain, forum, spanish steps etc. The only place we took the metro to was the vatican which was also easy to find and we bought a 24 hour metro pass which allowed us to freely use the subway to get around. The breakfast at hotel Patria was awful! We stayed at 3 different hotels on our stay and Patria had the worse breakfast. You were given stale buns/croissants, canned fruit, ham, jam, cereal. It was not appetizing so we would go to the grocery store and get food there. The grocery store is about a 5 minute walk down the main street so we would get fruits/veggies and store them in the minibar. If you do want to go out to eat beware of "ZEUS". This restaurant is just near the hotel, the food is awful! In desperation we went in cause we were so hungry and busted up $45 euros for the worse food ever. The bean soup was salty and watery, the pizza had canned mushrooms and was not fresh. We got a tempura dish that was so oily and tasteless. They will have people outside the restaurant trying to get you to come in but don't waste your money. We really loved this cafe right at Republica near the fountain. The cappincinos were reasonable, service good and you could sit outside and enjoy the view.
The second part of our stay when we came back, we got put on the 4th floor. The room was a bit nicer BUT the shower kept flooding/blocking.
Overall the place is ok, it did the trick for us because we were on a budget. Do yourself a favor and just eat breakfast elsewhere and don't bother bringing your laptop for they have no Wifi and the internet is downstairs in the lobby and it can be slow.

We've asked to switch rooms as soon as we walked in ours only to find out that all of them are just as nasty. (Read on for the resolution) Not like terribly nasty but imagine a what must have been green carpet from the 80's, (shaggy) with banged up furniture and questionable bed covers. We were told that smoking is permitted in all the rooms, you can imagine what that does to the room. The trick is to request/book a room on the top floor (no carpet there, just tile) if you don't mind stairs because the elevator only goes to 4th floor. We've asked twice, and on the third time a different clerk on duty took care of us and gave us a room on the top floor. Breakfast was so unappetizing that we (though very conservative with money) bought our own groceries like fruit and yogurt for the remainder of the stay. Overall we feel this place hasn't had an update since it opened, it was a drag having to come back there after a day of sightseeing so I'd say do yourself a favor and find a better recommended place even if it will be a few euros more
