This was our only disappointing hotel on our trip to Italy. We chose the location because it was near the Colosseum, which was the only plus since it was a 10 minute walk. It was also close to the subway stop which we used a couple of times (once to get to Vatican City and once home from Spanish steps).

We had a family suite. The windows were near the top of the wall so we had to stand on a chair to open them. Then we had a view of the knees of people walking on the patio, and they had a clear view down into our room. So we ended up keeping the windows shut all the time. The air conditioner dripped water all night. We mentioned it to front desk but nothing was fixed so we laid towels underneath every night. The hotel overall is dull and dingy, the carpets were filthy. The street it is located on is narrow and home to a couple of tiny bars. We didn't hear any noise but nonetheless I wasn't crazy about walking out at night.

The breakfast consisted of pre-packaged croissants, cereal, cheese slices (wrapped like Kraft slices). The service was abrupt. This was really disappointing especially after the excellent food at our previous hotel (Il Nido Ristorante in Sorrento).

If you do stay, there is a great pizza place on the corner and shwarma place around the corner. Both had good food and reasonable prices.

I would not stay at this place again, but I would choose a different hotel in this area.

Since last year was our third year at the Tirreno, it's obvious we enjoy it. The location is wonderful, the rooms clean and nice and the staff is wonderful - especially Marco and Massimo.

The small street the hotel is on is quiet and I've walked up the street late at night alone to the bar on the corner of the Via Merulana and felt perfectly safe - safer, in fact, than I'd feel walking in my residential neighborhood at home.

The hotel is close to two different metro stations and within walking distance to several restaurants - even one that's open on Sunday night.

I enjoy the continental breakfast and have not had any problem getting my morning espresso with breakfast.

My favorite room is 101. It has the tiny corner shower, but more than makes up for it by having a private garden with table, chairs and a fountain. It's nice to get bread, cheese and wine at the Elite grocery down the Via Cavour and enjoying it in the garden. Any leftovers can be kept in the little refrigerator for the next day.

Would I stay there again? You betcha. In fact, I've stayed there four times out of the last five years.

  • Liked — The location, the wonderful staff - too much to name
  • Disliked — That tiny corner shower

Had stayed in 3 star hotel in Florence which was fabulous and a 4 star hotel in Perugia which was even better so expected something similar in Rome - especially as the Hotel Tirreno was the most expensive of the three hotels during our holiday.

However, while the location is OK, it is central albeit up a dingy side street, and 5 minutes from the train station the hotel itself was a grave disappointment. The room was so small I was considering leaving my bag on the grimmy balcony as there was no room for it in the room bar on the bed or in the bathroom! The walls were paper thin and the TV channels worked intermittently.

The breakfast was pathetic to say the least with corn flakes and pre-packed European desserts. I had to ask several times each morning for a bowel for the cereal and the coffee was served in a silver saucepan which was somewhat bizarre! If there is nowhere else stay here but in the UK this hotel would be a one sstar at best. The plus, bathroom fine and Irish bar in the street does a good pint of Guiness!

Don't know how the last review gave it 5 stars. The reviewer must have been in prison and considered the room in the hotel 5 stars when compared with his previous accomodation!

Won't go back to the Tirreno if I got a free trip,

Mark

I was seeking two hotel rooms in Rome for one night at the end of a cruise. Money was tight (<$200/nite), location paramount (our second day in Rome!) along with security and a good night's sleep. Almost despaired, then was able to book a quad at Tirreno, about $150/couple.

They had our room ready when we showed up at 12:30 (check inis not til 2 p,m.) but when asked if there were by any chance doubles available were offered two (at higher price, but other couple preferred privacy to economy which was fine with us.) Check in regretted it would not be ready until 4 p.m. but we were heading out the door anyway!! They offered a rest room, place to keep luggage, a map and directions to the Colisseum (turn right, keep going!!!).

We left feeling welcomed and cared for. When we showed up at 9:30 p.m. somewhat the worse for wear, we found our rooms to be spacious, opening to a balcony (view obscured), simple, spotless, comfy kingsize bed (how common is that in Europe?!), spacious bathroom with the "sleeper" style shower stall!

Some noise from bar across the street (cheering for sport team) was drowned by our room fan. We slept wtih the door to the balcony open all night.

Breakfast was ample, served cheerfully. Brioche, croissant, juice, coffee, yogurt, basket of assorted "cric-crocs" and nutella. Second floor courtyard "solarium" was available to eat in as well.

Our first time in Rome. They were courteous, helpful and efficient. I was quite impressed taht they had our reservation that I had made on Booking.com two months before.

Would stay there again--longer!!!

I travelled Rome - Firenze - Rome in July 2008. When returning to Rome I spent 3 nights at Tirreno hotel. In Rome and Firenze I stayed in 3 different hotels and Tirreno was the best experience. The hotel has a very good but a quiet location in the very heart of Rome. The staff was friendly and helpful. The rooms were clean, air conditioned and had a commodious bathroom with bath. A nice breakfast was served in a good sized breakfast room. The breakfast was included. I walked a lot in the city of Rome so it was just wonderful to take a bath every evening. I can recommend this hotel and if I ever visit Rome again, I will doubtless stay in this hotel.
