I look for a hotel near Termini station because it is pretty central and, more importantly, because taking a bus or subway from Termini, you can get to anywhere in the city rapidly e.g. bus direct to St. Peter's or metro to Colosseum. I got what I thought was a good deal in Hotel Genova ($150 a night) though it was August of course. My room was pleasant and comfortable with good AC and was reasonable spacious. Bed was a little firm but OK. The bathroom was spacious and beautifully decorated with marble tiling. The shower, in contrast, was a triangular corner design and was really too tight (and I'm not big). I could see Americanus Magnus having some considerable difficulty manouvering in it. Linen face towels were provided. The breakfast was very modest, consisting largely of standardised and packaged items, machine coffee etc. There are some nice restaurants particularly on the Via Principe Amadeo which cuts across the Via Cavour and shops in the Termini station stay open late. On Sundays or Church holidays, Latin Mass with Gregorian Chant in nearby Sancta Maria Maggiore is an elevating experience.
