On a particularly busy weekend in Rome, my husband and I had a lot of trouble finding a place to stay (for last minute business plans)...we trusted the Best Western name and 4 star rating, and opted to give it a shot. I arrived first and was shocked to find it on a tiny side street in a very residential, quiet area, quite far from the city center and any kind of activity (but not far from other exciting finds like the National Gallery of Modern Art). The entrance is small and unassuming, tucked into a local neighborhood, and the structure is definitely not 4 star quality. Decor is outdated and dark -- as was the room. Elevator is miniscule, dark and apt for one person only - don't go if claustrophobic in any way! Lighting in room was not the best, also in bathroom - which was quite dark and decorated in balck tile, but was surprisingly large (about half the size of the room). Room was clean with tv, closet, but not much warmth. Bed was ok, not the best but not the worst. When I opened the window shades, I was shocked to find massive scaffolding and dirt all aorund the tiny windowsill/floor area. No one was working that day but it made us feel quite unsafe and uncomfortable and as if we could not open the window to enjoy the view or air. Breakfast was very minimal (had to pay extra for orange juice), breakfast staff kind, breakfast room/area is fine, bright. Complimentary map of city but not much more as far as service. I explored a few blocks in each direction and found only one cafe and one alimentari shop where I bought a sandwich and some minimal food from minimal offerings, because there were no other shops in the vicinity. Late that night after much wandering, we discovered an Argentinian restaurant Karioka tucked into a residential street , the food and service were superb! best pasta amatriciana in world -- we went back the next night for more ! Great service.. and we will definitely return there, but not the hotel. aA high point was the Natl Gallery of modern art about 10 minutes walk ...super structure and magnificent museum. Would return for sure! also found a good hair salon nearby (on Buozzi main road - one block from hotel) -great service and quality. Hotel quality was poor and hard to believe it is a 4 star. Best western - how can you call it 4 star ? Taxis hard to get - wave one down if lucky or call and wait for arrival.
