Me and my wife stayed at the Barocco for three nights between aug 18th and 21st. It was our first ever trip to Rome and we choose the hotel based on some good reviews that I had read. We were not dissappointed. August is the big holiday month for the Romanesi so in the streets you saw mostly tourists and about 50% of the smaller shops and restaurants were closed. Even so, there was plenty of good places to shop, eat etc. All the attractions and sights were open and available.
Arriving with the metro at Piazza Barberini we crossed the square and located the entrance on a small sidestreet. The hotel is in a good location, the nearest attraction is the Spanish Steps where you will walk in 5 minutes. You’ll be another 5-10 minutes from what we found to be “the center” of Rome, Campo de Fiori and Piazza Navona.
The lobby is rather small with a sitting area with couches and informational material. The reception staff were very polite, efficient and helpful when we asked for directions and advice on where to find an open market etc. The staff spoke very good english. One day when it was raining slightly, we found plenty of umbrellas for the guests to borrow. There is a small elevator that will only fit 2, maximum 3 adults. I suppose since the hotel in located in an old building there are some rather narrow and winding corridors in addition to some “semi-floors” that may pose a small problem to people with disabilities. The lobby and common areas were always very clean and tidy.
Our room, a double, was on the 4th floor. There was a small room where you entered with a luggage rack and a desk. The bedroom was not very large but nicely decorated and with a queen-size bed with good comfort. Housekeeping was very good. There was a closet with plenty of room for hanging clothes and a medium-sized safe with electronic code lock (no extra charge). There were to air-conditioning machines, one in the bedroom and one near the entrance. They were quite quiet and efficient and could be turned down at night not to make too much noise.
The bathroom was large and well lit (I find bad lighting is often a problem in hotel baths). There was a bathtub/jacuzzi with massage-jets in working condition that would fit 2 persons. There was also a shower cabinet with massage-function. The water pressure was good and there was plenty of hot water.
The breakfast was served on the ground floor. It was a buffet that I found better than most other hotel breakfast I’ve had in southern Europe. Waiters would take your order for coffe, tea or cappuchino (good!). When my wife wanted boiled egg (not in the buffet) it was not a problem. The buffet consisted of rolls, cold meats of good quality (nice ham), cheeses, spreads and jams, scrambled eggs and bacon (which didn’t look very crisp). There was also youghurts, muesli and cornflakes. There was a selection of croissants and fresh cakes/apple pie etc.
To summarize, we were very happy and content with our stay at the Barocco. Good location, clean and nicely decorated rooms, good staff, good breakfast. Good starting point for exploring Rome on foot or by bus/metro. You can tell that the hotel has been built in an old building which makes for narrow hallways and rooms with slightly unpractical lay-out.
