“Perfect location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2012

Although you have to pay for the extras, including a high cost for wifi, the InterContinental is the perfect location at the top of the Spanish Steps. Their brunch was fabulous and the service excellent. The concierge was unfriently and not helpful, but other hotel staff were great. We loved our room and the architecture of the hotel was a real treat. The brunch was amazing and room service prompt. Just a friently warning - Rome taxi drivers will rip you off every chance they get. Be careful and discuss the cost before you get in. However, the taxi drivers are considerate - they cover the meters so you don't see how badly you're being taken. We always use EuropeanDestinations for our trips to Europe and we arrange the transportation to/from the airport through them as part of our package. Thank goodness this time was no exception, but we learned to take care after the first time of using a taxi to get across the city.

Room Tip: Our room was on the fifth floor and we loved it. Brunch is served on the second floor. It's ea...

Location, location, location! This hotel overlooks the Spanish Steps and is within an easy walk of lots of attractions. It is a grand and comfortable place with a very helpful and attentive staff. The rooms are clean, comfortable and offer great amenities. If you are a Virturuoso traveler upgrades are available. Breakfast is served in the plaza area and offers an amazing assortment. Dinner, during the warmer months, is served at "La Piazzetta", a roof top setting with astounding views of Rome. While a bit on the pricey side The Intercontinental is worth the extra dollar/euro.

The hotel was nice overall. Friendly concierge service and front desk staff. Room was comfortable and spacious. I would stay here again. The bar and bistro on the rooftop was beautiful at night and their brunch was divine!!!

The hotel's accommodations are standard not luxurious in the least. What is also troubling is the high charge for wi-fi and a charge JUST TO USE an international electric converter. 8 euros even if you give it back. Not one of the receptionists behind the desk called us by name, smiled or welcomed us. The staff and hotel is just going through the motions and your trip to Rome deserves much more than that. Keep looking. This is not a good choice. I don't understand the other reviews except maybe in a large tour group there is different treatment but for the traveler on their own this is not the place to be.

Dear Nandy,

thank you for having taken the time to publish your comment on tripadvisor.com.
Our mission is for you to enjoy your holiday in a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere, we are sorry that we have not been successful in your case.
Nevertheless, we appreciate your opinions and comments, as constructive criticism is the only way to know the reality and to improve quality, services as well as facilities, to avoid future complaints for the same reason like yours.
Regarding the rate for wi-fi, I wish you to inform you that the IHG company is working on it and probably it would be free in a near future.

I preface this review with a disclaimer: we cashed in loads of Priority Club points for a weekend stay at this hotel so all we paid for was incidentals. I've seen the price tag and I don't consider 400euros a night to be justifiable for many hotels.
Rooms - I had read a lot of reviews of this hotel that said how small the rooms were. We got upgraded to an executive room and I thought it was a nice size. Giant king size bed, desk, table and chair, space for the closet and luggage and a reasonable size bathroom. There are a lot of Americans that stay here (it is a predominantly American chain) and compared to American hotels, European hotels are much more compact, hence the common review. That said, I was very pleased with the size of the room, especially given the location. The bathroom was pretty standard with high quality toiletries but I will say that my husband thought the shower was amazing.
Fitness Centre - You won't find many hotels in this area with a fitness centre but this one had a nice little one. Two treadmills, a bike or two, rowing machine and free weights. The equipment was high quality and we used it twice in three days. It was a nice amenity to have although I don't think it gets much use.
Bar - We didn't realise that when you get a drink in Italy, you usually get nibbles to go with it. We got nibbles at a number of different places but the snacks at Intercontinental were by far the best. One was, we think, a deep fried sausage stuffed olive, which sounds like Italy-meets-South-Carolina-state-fair but was really delicious. There were also kalamata olives, crisps, fried artichokes, and various other savouries. When we told them we'd already had dinner they brought over sweet snacks as well. But you get what you pay for and while the snacks don't have a line item on the bill, you pay for them in the price of drinks. It was definitely a nice treat to have the mixologist make us up a mojito at the end of a long day in town, though.
Hotel Location - This was definitely the stand out quality of the hotel; the location was unbeatable. You are paces away from the top of the Spanish Steps, at the bottom of which is a lovely high end shopping district and a plethora of amazing restaurants. (I'll be writing reviews of a few restaurants in the next few days if you want my thoughts on them). In the evenings the steps are packed with people enjoying the view, people watching, selling useless trinkets, etc. It is a lively area and great as long as you aren't bothered by a significant number of stairs to tackle on your return from the hotel.
Service - Everyone at this hotel was super friendly and helpful. When we arrived we were quite early but reception checked us in straight away and let us know that a room was ready for us already. We got great tips on restaurants from concierge, too (go to Via Vittorio). And on our final day, we were able to leave our bags at the hotel while we spent one last day exploring, finally picking them up before we headed to the airport around 5:30pm.
Tips for getting to the hotel - When you look on Google Maps, it looks as though the hotel is equidistant to Barberini and Spagna metro stations. In reality, it is much closer to Spagna but that station is at the bottom of the steps. So when you first arrive and you have luggage, I'd suggest getting off the metro at Barberini and walking up Via Sistina a few blocks, but the rest of the time we used Spagna.

Room Tip: We loved our room overlooking Via Sistina but it is a busy road so if you can't sleep with traff...

This hotel is what you can expect of a classic European hotel. Conveniently placed on top of spannidh steps, it is an excellent location. The staff is professional but I felt meals and services in general were overpriced. Uneasy and pricey wifi access is a big letdown for me as I really don't understand why one has to pay so much for such a basic service. So as a busy business traveller I felt this was a let down. Also for such a fancy hotel, the room are in need of an update as classic is good, but forest green carpets from the late 80's are a bit of a turndown. This hotel is not bad at all, dont get me wrong, but a few tweaks are needed to fit year 2012 and beyond.

Never having visited Italy we were so excited to be able to spend two nights in Rome before beginning a cruise. Our travel agent booked us in the Intercontinental and we are so happy that he did! We traveled overnight from the USA, arriving at the Rome airport around 7:00 AM tired, but excited! We were met just outside baggage claims area by a driver from the hotel. He was so kind to us and eased any worries that we had concerning finding our way. We arrived at the hotel really early, but the staff was very accomodating. They allowed us early checkin which gave us a place to shower and change before we started our day in Rome. The location is excellent. Just everything and everyone we encountered in the hotel was so nice to us. We will definitely stay in this hotel again if we are ever able to return to Rome!
