Maybe our perception was a little skewed coming directly from the Hotel Villa Franca in Positano where the balcony in our room overlooked the city and the water, but we were expecting much more in a five star hotel. Our nonsmoking room smelled like smoke and the carpet was old and stained like the carpet in a fraternity house. The headboard, which was the focal point of the room, looked like it came out of the 80's. There was a hole in the ceiling directly outside of our room. Nice touch. This room was on the first floor, but I'm not sure if there are really better rooms. Maybe you just have to stay in the penthouse suites where the terrace seems to be.
For Americans, this hotel is extremely expensive, since the dollar is doing poorly. If you're going to spend the money, stay at the St. Regis a few blocks away, where our friends stayed. We saw their room, and it was what a five star hotel room should be -- it was gorgeous and the bathroom was luxurious.
The positive things I have to say about the d'Ingliterra...The location is very good. It really is right by the Spanish Steps. The concierge is helpful -- this is one area where the d'Ingliterra beats the St. Regis grand. The outdoor dining area is a nice place to start your day. We only had the complimentary breakfast, so we can't tell you anything about the restaurant other than the fact that a cheeseburger ordered from room service costs 30 Euro.
