Max the Concierge was the greatest asset to this hotel, but all their staff were very nice. The hotel is beautiful, our room was smallish but faced Via Veneto with a nice view - great for an all Marriott Rewards point certificate we were using. The free internet was a great bonus, as was free 800 calls. The dining room was very nice too (never busy) - their onion soup was the best I've ever had (had it 3 times that week) and their entrees great too. I liked the bar music, but the drinks are expensive (12 euros for a Hennesey VSOP). The room service Club Sandwich will be enough for two meals and a good breakfast for only (?) 14 euros.
They have a switch in each room to plug north american electrics in - we took a travel water boiler so we could have coffee!! TV is a problem - the only English channels are CNN, BBC and some sports...next time I'd take my portable DVD player and a bunch of movies to watch in off touring time.
Location was fun, with restaurants everywhere you turn including Harry's Bar across the street, and a great breakfast place a 3 minute walk left from Flora's front door...we had great pasta there too at lunch one afternoon. An Argentinian boulevard dining room across the street was great food - the entrecote sirloin a real treat. Andrea restaurant around the corner 5 minutes walk had great food - the osso bucco was best ever! Shopping in the area is expensive -- you can buy for less at home. Dining isn't cheap either, but the food is outstanding everywhere. The Westin is 2 short blocks down the road too and they have a great dining room. Hotel picked me up at the airport for 75euros - you could probably do better than that if you take a chance, but the charge goes on your hotel bill and you get points for it.
Concierge arranged a city private limo tour with a driver called Roberto (Palazzi ph. 333-2276501) and in 4 hours (123 euros - more points) he took us everywhere and had passes to get his Mercedes (and us) into everyplace including past police barricades at the Vatican where only people were allowed - amazing. Also took us to the top of a hill to have the greatest overlook of the Ancient City. We covered a lot of distance in just 4 hours and it was a great investment in getting oriented to a new city - Roberto spoke pretty good English too! info@palazzi.net
We went to Sorrento after this for a few days and got an Amalfi driver to pick us up at the Flora in Rome and drive us there for 400 euros, then a 4 hour Amalfi coast tour one day for 200 euros, and a couple of days later he drove us to Florence for 500 euros -- surprisingly it wasn't that much more than trains, city taxis fares so you might consider it too - not having to lug bags around train stations was a real treat! All in all, we had a great Italian holiday and to start it off on the right foot the Marriott Grand Hotel Flora was the best.
