Hotel D'este is not fancy, but it is clean, the rooms surprisingly roomy and it is close to the metro's one line. There is a supermarket close by. The hotel staff was friendly and English was spoken.
There is an excellent restaurant across the street which came highly recommended in the guide book we had and it turned out to be lovely indeed. China town is 2 blocks to the west and we enjoyed the cheap shopping! There is also a lovely semi precious jewellery shop on the next corner on your way to the Termini station.
Let's be honest, it is not the best part of town and late at night I felt a bit uncomfortable walking home from the station. Although my husband says I am just a paranoid South African!

Stayed here in May 09. Was originally booked into a hotel across the street, but that hotel had double booked and got me accomodation in Hotel D'Este.
I was on a budget, just wanted somewhere clean and basic to sleep at night and this hotel was fine for that purpose. Airconditioning worked but didnt cool the room as much as needed, shower bowl seemed to leak and bathroom floor was always wet afterward. Safe didnt work either. Ive stayed in cheap hotels in Italy before so you should really expect these kind of issues for this price. If you can live with that, you'll be fine.

Breakfast was very generous. Typical contintental buffet with alot of choice and big quantities of everything. Staff arent the nicest but I had no need to require anything from them so i had no problems. Location of the hotel is great. Within walking distance of the Termini station and theres a handy metro station on the end of the street to take you anywhere in the eternal city.

A decent no frills hotel in central Rome that is perfect for someone who just wants a place to sleep and eat breakfast

My mum, Sister & I went for a long weekend, it was mums 70th birthday.
Hotel was very dark and dreary, the room was large, which was fine, as there was the 3 of us. It was very basic. No Tea/Coffee making facilities. No mini bar. A safety deposit box that didnt work. One small window, that over looked the breakfast room. The beds were comfy and clean . .
The bathroom was basic, the shower was not as cleaned as i would have liked, showered almost with eyes closed!

In the morning, if anyone was going early, you heard every little noise, imagine what the cases being banged and rolled about sounded like, as well as high heels!! Rooms could do with soundproofing & a coat of paint.
breakfast was ok, not great, but it done until lunchtime. it was cleared away at 9.30am on the button!!
One thing to beware about is the Taxi drivers, we got a taxi at the train station when we arrived, gave the name of the hotel and agreed a price of E20 -E25 which sounded ok to us, he drove us around for about 10 mins, then dropped us at the hotel. The next night we noticed a building at the end of our street, went to see what is was . . . . . the train station, were we had walked out on our 1st day!!! Not even a 5 min walk from our hotel . . ouch!

we would go back to Rome and stay in the same area, but not same hotel.

I didn't have much time to plan this trip to Italy and D'Este were one of the cheapest hotels I found with rooms available. I must say I was a bit disapointed. The room was very, very small, even for european standards, and not so clean either _I found an old piece of cheese in the closet. The walls are also very thin, and I could hear every single conversation of the family that was staying next door.

It sure has a great location, near the train station and just a 1 minute walk to a subway station. But I guess you can find better hotels at the same price range if you plan your trip more carefully.
