“Will not be going back!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2013 via mobile

Have just got back from staying in some thing out of the dark ages! The mixture of furniture was like something out of my nan's room! There was slimy mould in the bathroom and the toilet leaked so the bathroom floor was always wet. A missing light bulb in the ceiling lights. The electric sockets were all lose when I unplugged my hair dryer the casing came off with it! I think the staff turned off the free wifi at popular times. Reception staff were not very polite or helpful even telling us we had only booked for 2 nights not 3 and were adamant on this and then no apology when he realised he was wrong!

On a positive the breakfast was nice, buffet style of bread, croissants, cold meats, fruit & yoghurts etc.

Location was good, you could walk to the coliseum in about 20 mins and the hop on hop off busses were 5 minutes walk away. The area was ok a short walk were some nice restaurants. Wouldn't want to walk around on my own but with my boyfriend it was fine. Watch out for dog poo though, lots of it!

Would I stay here again, no!

It seems like this hotel had it's last refurbishment about 30 years ago. It was a real "hotch potch of styles. Nothing matched! Plumbing in the shower didn't seem to match the wash basin or toilet. The plug in the bidet seem to get stuck all the time. The hotel was clean but definitely in need of renovation. The place had lots of "ad hoc" repairs that seemed to be done by amateur decorators. The people at reception could do a bit more to welcome guests. The only one who made a noticeable effort was the Polish guy on Night Duty.

Room Tip: It was central but nothing more. The Polish guy at reception was friendly and helpful. The others di...

Awful hotel. Service- non existent. Never one smile from anyone. Room- uncomfortable bed, dusty dirty floor, thin walls, dated decor. Location- OK for Rome, but be aware it's the heart of Chinatown. Lots of homeless on the streets outside making walking back at night very uncomfortable.

This was an adequate hotel, but not perfect . . .

Pros:

The staff were lovely and willing to help with any issue or question. They are multi-lingual and spoke Italian, English, and what appeared to be Mandarin Chinese. They had a vast knowledge of the city and were able to offer advice.

The cleaning staff were quick and efficient, and - if you came back to the hotel early - would change their schedule to accommodate you.

The location was perfect. Just a twenty minute walk to the Trevi Fountain, a thirty minute walk to the Colosseum, and a five minute walk to the Termini Station.

The breakfast service was relatively good. There was a selection of breads, yoghurt, meats, and various other items (not great for allergies or religious diets, but for the unfussy eater it's quite a nice and large selection in a lovely little room).

Cons:

The hotel was rather dirty. My desk in the room had a layer of dust. There were several insects that appeared in my room, and the outside of the hotel was covered in cigarette butts. The skirting boards in the foyer, statues and mirrors too, were stained yellow and dirty.

All local shops and restaurants close on a Sunday, but the hotel offers no all-day restaurant or cooking facilities, so - if you have dietary needs - be prepared to starve for an entire day.

The room was also lacking in facilities. There is only one plug socket, located behind the fridge, that requires moving the fridge and table to access it. The curtain rod was broken, so I could only pull back one curtain ever. There were two beds: one so old and soft that I was lying on springs and a lumpy pillow, no sleep at all, and the other was so hard that I may as well have been lying on stone.

The noise was ATROCIOUS. There is NO sound-proofing, so you may as well be watching TV WITH your neighbours, and when people go into the hallway to make a phone-call, you can actually shout out and participate in the conversation, it's so damned clear.

There is no wi-fi connection (except for a small area of the lobby, that - unfortunately - has no cell-phone reception).

Conclusion:

All in all, it was a fair place to be. I wouldn't recommend leaving the hotel alone at night, but this is the fault of the city, not the hotel (the streets are covered in graffiti, with the smell of urine and a lot of dog faeces). I would not personally return to Rome willingly, but - if I did - I would consider this hotel for a short-term stay, but for a longer stay I would prefer somewhere a bit more luxurious. There are dozens of hotels in the centre, all spitting distance, for a similar price. I would recommend one of those for a long-stay tourist.

Room Tip: Upper floors are difficult to access, as the elevator only has room for two people (or one person pl...

Admittedly, this hotel does not exactly qualify as a standard three-star, and yes it does require modernization. If you're looking for a luxurious hotel to spend your time in whilst you're in Rome where to intend to 'enjoy' a hotels facilities to the fullest, then this is not for you.

However it served perfectly to what I was looking for:
- A clean room with aircon to come back to each night.
- A hygienic bathroom.
- A comfortable bed for a good nights sleep.
- A simple breakfast to provide you with the energy for a day out. (If you're expecting a breakfast buffet with hot food, then you're looking at the wrong place. But the breadrolls, cheese spreads, cold-cut meats, coffee and yoghurt pots are just fine).

Service varies: day-time receptionist is very helpful; grave-yard shift receptionist is not as enthusiastic.

But at the very end of it, I came to Rome to visit the city itself with no intention whatsoever to 'enjoy' the hotel. Hotel D'Este perfectly provided a clean, safe and comfortable place for resting each night. I would gladly use it again.

Basic hotel right in the centre of Rome, perfect location for sightseeing, 15 mins walk to Coloseum and 10 mins to bus/train terminal (No.64 bus takes you straight to Vatican and back from terminal). Plenty of low cost eating in the local area.
Hotel is old fashioned, small rooms with old well used furniture but it was very clean and ideal if you only intend to sleep there. Breakfast was dissapointing and very limited in choice. Supermarket just around the corner for large bottled drinks (Coke and water) at UK prices.

Remember its a basic hotel at a budget price so don't expect a lot, I would recommend it if you want to see Rome on a budget and be withing walking distance of most attractions.

Room Tip: If you want a quiet room ask for one at rear of hotel otherwise road noise may keep you awake.

Stayed 2 nights, read the many bad reviews before staying but I'm not sure what people expect for the location and price. We literally stayed here to sleep and have breakfast, nothing more and was perfect for that.
Room was very clean and basic, furniture I agree is maybe old etc but we didn't plan on making it a temp home.
Breakfast was just different breads and pastries, cakes, yogurt, fruit etc and a selection of hot drinks or juice, basic but definitely fills you up, we didn't need to eat again until 2/3pm!
Receptionist in the day was friendly, booked our tour bus for us and gave us directions and hints for the area - not much interaction witht he guy at night but ackowledged us with a smile.
As for the area, nothing scary going on, location was great, we even walked from our hotel to Colloseum late at night with no trouble, about a 10 minute walk!
Overall, if you're looking for somewhere to sleep easy and breakfast up, this is great, if you're spending more than this in a hotel, you may be disappoited.
