Good location, decent rooms, but I would never stay at a Leonardi (the owners of the Genio) property again. Here is an email we sent to the management. We went through a scary experience that disrupted our stay, and upset many hotel guests. They never apologized. They never had the decency to respond after numerous attempts to contact them. (I know they received our emails. When I sent another email with a different return address asking about a future reservation, they quickly responded). This is no way to treat a customer.

Here is our story - as told to Leonardi in our complaint:

Dear Sir:

We have been staying at your Hotel Genio property since Sunday, July 15 in two rooms. Last night, as you may already know, the fire alarm sounded at approximately 12:45 AM (00:45). While this can happen anywhere, the response of the hotel staff was completely inadequate, creating confusion and distress among the hotel’s guests. The night manager on duty, having no idea what to do when the alarm went off, simply stood behind the desk and did nothing. He did not even know whether it was a real or a false alarm. Later we were told that he had checked the building, but I was one of the first people in the lobby immediately after the alarm sounded and I can tell you he did nothing. In fact, he refused to call either the police or the fire department.

In the absence of assistance from the hotel, a few guests took it upon themselves to first alert all guests and get them out of the building. Then we began demanding that the manager call the police, and absent any action on his part, attempted to use cell phones and pay phones to reach the police, even going so far as to walk around the neighborhood in search of help.

In the end, we, your guests, stood outside the hotel for over an hour before any additional hotel management arrived, and it was another 20 minutes before the police finally arrived. No explanations
were offered; no attempt to make us comfortable was made. Eventually we were told that it was safe to return to the hotel, but since nobody had yet checked the building for any possible smoke or fire conditions, most of us were unwilling to take the manager’s word. It was 2:30 AM by the time the police and firefighters added their assurances and we went back to our rooms.

I have characterized the hotel’s response as inadequate. Your manager
on duty was clearly not prepared for an emergency. His refusal to contact any emergency personnel is beyond comprehension. Another hotel guest repeatedly asked to see a written copy of the emergency response procedure, but it could not be located. We were even more concerned for our safety because earlier in the evening we were told that the hotel’s outside phone lines were not working.

We were fortunate that this was a false alarm. Had it been an actual fire, there is no doubt that the hotel’s response would have resulted
in injuries and loss of life.

We expect much better of a hotel in the Leonardi group. We considered
checking out this morning, but decided to complete the 3-night stay we originally booked through venere.com. We will be checking out as planned tomorrow morning. I expect to see a full credit for last night (both rooms) on our bill at checkout.

Beware anyone considering booking this hotel!!!.

Having booked through the hotel's own web site 2 months in advance we arrived only to find a very brusque front desk clerk telling us that they had overbooked and we should make our way to another hotel in the chain that had a room. When I asked to see the manager I was told he 'was not on duty until the evening'. Reluctantly we switched to the other hotel (Argentine) which turned out to be fine, with much more courteous staff. This however was not the point, we chose the Genio afor its location. We insisted the Genio paid for the taxi. If you read through the full set of reviews of the Genio you will find this scenario (scam) has happened a number of times. What made our experience even more frustrating was that the Genio had offered to arrange airport transfers, which we accepted. On arrival the driver was there to meet us and, after a smooth journey, dropped us in good faith at a hotel we had been bounced from yet the hotel did not have the decency to tell us nor the driver in advance.

So if you choose to book the Genio you have no guarantee you will get to stay there...!!

We were booked at another hotel in this group - the 3* Daniela, which appeared OK but was in a slightly remote location away from Termini station. On our arrival there at 22.30 we were not best pleased to be told that the hotel was full - but they could transfer us to the 4* Genio at no extra charge. We struck gold in this respect because the Genio is in a fantastic location by the Piazza Navona (we think the nicest Piazza in Rome) - v. central within walking distance of just about everything. The room if slightly on the compact size was decorated and serviced to a high standard. The hotel has a lovely roof terrace with views of the Rome skyline. The front desk staff are efficient, charming and could not have been more helpful. They organised our return airport transfer to Fumincino airport in chauffeur driven Merc for 45 Euro - great deal to avoid mayhem of Termini station in rush hour.
Only slght niggle - coffee served at breakfast wasn't too hot in any sense of the word. But -OVERALL A GREAT STAY & TERRIFIC. 3 DAY BREAK.

Just got back from our stay at the Genio and was delighted with the hotel. Location is super, 3 mins walk to the piazza navona and easy walking to the trevi and the pantheon. The staff were great and couldn't do enough to help you find your way across the city. The rooms were tastefully decorated and well furnished. The Roof terrace was clean and tidy with plenty of seats and tables for your morning breakfast ( 3 euro for breakfast on the roof ). The Breakfast room was a good size, flooded with light and the food was very acceptable. I would definitely recommend the genio and would stay there again myself.

We had the same experience as "GLADIATOR 163". I made reservations on 30 May '07 for 5 nights 28 Sept- 3 Oct. When we arrived, they were overbooked and my copy of the confirmed e-mail meant nothing. We considered it a definate "bait & switch". They did have room at another of their Leonardi chain hotel, and sent us over there. After 2 nights they got us back into the Genio for the final 3 nights. I chose the Genio based on the location, so I was very unhappy about the Bait & Switch technique! The location is definately great, the hotel is OK but only average, decent breakfast, reasonable service, friendly staff. All-in-all, it's an OK hotel in a very good location.
