Can't believe the last review stating that it was in a poor location!!! 5 mins maximum walk from the termini, turn left out of the hotel then left at the top of the road and 15-20mins pleasant stroll later you are in Republicca, walk through termini and out the other side, 5 mins later you are at the one of the most beautiful churches you will ever see. Five minutes on the underground from termini and you can either be at the Colisseum or the Vatican........you get my drift?

Hotel room itself was basic but I didn't go to Rome to sit in my room, breakfast was standard fare, front desk staff were excellent and couldn't have been more helpful, the guy that was on shift when we arrived took the time to point out the important areas on a free street guide. We asked for a decent local restaurant and were directed round the corner to a little place called "La Famiglia"(sp), which was so good we didn't eat anywhere else during our stay, but drink the house wine rather than the more expensive bottles as it is really quite good.

Sex cinema and strip club round the corner but no trouble or undesirables hanging around which could have been to do with the soldiers on the street corners (some embassies in the area) or the close by police station.

Basically an upmarket basic hotel which probably isn't four star but for location and friendliness of staff is just what you need if you are going to be out and about sightseeing as we were.

If this is in the top 20% of Rome hotels -what do the other 80% look like?

The hotel is a pit. I asked for a room not facing the street. So I got a room facing the back courtyard with scaffolding and laundry lines. Ok. So I'll keep my windows closed. See attached picture. At least I won't hear the street traffic all night long.

There are no drawers in the room. Only hanging room. No coffee and tea set. One has to call the front desk and then they bring it to you. The bathroom has one big towel but the hand towel is the old style linen towel (not terry) one might find in a grandmothers kitchen. The toilet paper is the industrial precut type one finds in bus and train stations.

The TV has Pay TV but the hotel staff weren't able to get it to work in my room. Every day they have to "play" with the system to get it to work.

Minibar doesn't have diet Coke only regular Coke.

Coffee at breakfast is a blend between Turkish coffee and instant coffee that is terrible. Even after adding a quarter cup of milk the color was still ashen grey.

On checkout, I had asked the previous night if I needed to order a taxi to the airport. They said they work with a car service for 48Euro. I told them I had a taxi from the airport for 40Euro (fixed rate) so I would prefer a taxi. They said just come down and we'll order it on the spot.

The following morning I had them order a taxi and when I went outside, there was a black Mercedes with no taxi sign. I didn't have time to argue so I took it - and got taken to the tune of 50Euro.

And this hotel is rated 201 out of 1136 hotels in Rome on Tripadvisor. I'd hate to see what the other 900 hotels look like.
