“Enjoyable Stay at Hotel Universo”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2013

My wife and I have just returned back from a 3 night stay at the Best Western Hotel Universo.

We arrived by train from Pisa and the hotel is situated about a 5 min walk from Roma Termini. Although coming out of the station at the other side meant that we had a slight detour until we located it! You want to come out facing the bus station and then turn to the left!! The hotel is a couple of blocks in that direction.

We got a good welcome and had a nice room with balcony on the 4th floor. Staff were very friendly and they provided us with a useful map showing Roma and the hotel location along with the main tourist attractions. Although all maps of rome seem to be tiny and for the first few days we were always getting lost!

The hotel room was nice with a large bathroom and good aircon. The room had wifi, tv and mini bar. We had breakfast at the hotel which had a good choice. There are a couple of bars but plently resturants nearby.

As you are so close to the train and bus network you can jump on the tour bus or take the metro. Please note that even in april these were mega busy with us waiting for 50 mins to get on a tour bus at 9.30am!

I read some of the reviews about the location - Roma is a big city - its a good location and you can walk to the main attractions - to be honest that is the easiest way to get around!! There are lots of people trying to sell you things but that is all over Roma!

The hotels in Roma can be pricey but we got a good nights sleep, the street was pretty quiet and it was a good place to be based for touring. We would stay here again if we come back to Roma but we would definetly have to come back out of season as the tours and queues were unreal! You must prebook to beat the queues!

A good Hotel near to the Railway and bus station. On arrival at the Airport we took the Express
train to Rome and were able to walk easily to the Hotel. Very handy as we used the train during our trip to visit another town, The Hotel was clean, warm and easy to settle into. The bedroom was stylish, very clean and comfortable.Breakfast adequate, a nice lounge/bar to enjoy an end of the day drink and was reasonably priced. All things considered I would revisit. Lots of shops within easy reach as are some of the historical places of interest in this remarkable city.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the street

Rooms are equiped with modern facilities.
Bathrooms has the essential amenities
such as hair dryers, clean towels, soap, shampoo etc.
that a guest may need except that I find
no slippers.

Front Desk attendant seems argumental.
We were in the group and upon check in,
we were trying to arrange room assignments
according to family wherein rooms has to be
as close possible from the other. The front desk
attendant expressed irritation and was angry as
they are have pre assigned rooms in advance
as they find it inconvenient to interchange name
records from their system.

Breakfast buffet was just ok. Nothing extra ordinary.
Being in the service industry, they must adjust to
the comfort and convenice of the guests.

Porter service was indicated as part of the service but none was provided

Location is great as going around is very easy and convenient.
Shops and restaurant are just around the corner.

Plus factor is free wifi facility that could cater to travelers on business.

Stayed at the Hotel Universo for three nights from 18th April. Our review is practically identical to many others posted.
Good points:
Good Location near Termini Railway Station.(although the area is only ok at night time)
Clean Rooms/ Bathroom with good housekeeping,
Quite good Breakfast selection.

Not so good points.

As repeated in many reviews ( Management seem to ignore these), the Rooms that are on two levels appear at first glance to be fine, good space with a small living area with a loft style bed space.
The problem is that the upper area gets stifling hot at night and if you leave the window open at the lower level you are awake all night with a very noisy street just below.
The Hotel Web site claims "Air Conditioned Sound Proof Rooms " yet when you ask for a/c, and after quoting their own Web site ,you are told by reception " that it is against the law " to turn it on until the outside temperature rises, such a load of baloney ! this response/answer just treats their Guests as fools !.
After asking to check out we were then offered a smaller room which was ok, although the receptionist seemed to imply that he was doing us a great favour , but at least we could sleep , which is the prime essential in choosing a Hotel, the second room had a/c, we turned it on without fearing that the air con Police would be knocking at our door !.
We also heard many other complaints about the heat in these two level rooms.
The Bar area in the Hotel is absolutely dead at night and although other reviewers said there were Bars nearby we could not find them, the area is near the Main Train Station (and as is common in many cities) the area is not one to wander around casually at night.
When we return to the wonderful City of Rome ,our room experience and in particular the way it was handled would definitely put The Hotel Universo way down our list..
Management please respond ???

Room Tip: If you must stay here try for a Room on the 6/7 floor , at least you can open the window and at that...

Dear Opel, thank you for your comment.
First of all, I want to apologize for the inconvenience occurred with the A/C.
Matter of factly we respect the local law, regarding the heating/cooling service: during your stay temperature was not to be considered high.
Furthermore, we are proud to be part of a nice “green project” called "Stay for the Planet" subsequentely we are very careful and respect the right parameters of CO2 emissions.
With reference to our Bar service, in our Guest directory is very well explained that Bar opening hours are from 12:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m..
I am sorry but we are not responsible for the opening hours of other clubs and bars nearby. For your information all bars in Rome close at 3 a.m. according to the local law,
At last, I would like to know why you wrote that the Management does not reply to reviews: this is completely false.
We have a dedicated service taking care of that and our Guest Relations Manager replies every day to dozen of comments, on Trip Advisor and on others websites.
That's all proven by the many replies pubblished below either in english than in other languages.
We remain at your disposal for any further clarification.
Best regards

Stayed here in march. Lovely hotel close to train station and within walking distance of attractions. Nice rooms, good beds, clean, and lovely view from the balcony in our room. Plenty to eat at breakfast and very good. Plenty of restaurant close by and good pub not to far away, Druids den, live bands and good prices on drinks.

The bed was comfy and the shower was great and as room sizes go in Rome it wasn't bad. The desk staff didn't seem too bothered bout been welcoming or friendly but were efficient. The heat was my biggest issue. It was hot in the city and the room got very warm when I asked how to work the air con I was told they have an Eco initiative so they are energy saving and therefore unless the temp outside rose considerably they couldn't turn it on. I tried to leave the window open but it was too noisy outside on the street with loud bin collector at 1am and 7am so ended up not getting much sleep. Marco was a joy and very friendly and helpful. It's handy close to the metro/termini but the neighbourhood isn't great.

For the last leg of our recent Euro Trip we decided to visit Rome during Holy Week. We stayed at The Hotel Universo for 5 days. It was just a two minute walk from the Termini Station which made it very easy and accessible for us to go sightseeing. There was a lot good restaurants and gelato shops when you cross to the other side of Via Cavour. We walked to that area a few times to dine and or to have gelato. The street that the hotel is on was always packed with parked cars (day/night) the whole time we were there. I found that very unsightly and made the street look very crowded.

Upon checking in, the hotel staff was friendly and efficient. We stayed in a room that had a separate sleeping loft upstairs. The additional single bed was set up downstairs, but still had room for a small couch and a coffee table. It was handy for afternoon rests or for husbands to sit on while waiting on their wives to finish getting ready. The room was spacious for 3 people and the bathroom was a decent size as well. The breakfast buffet had a good selection ( had a few hot items) and they had a big enough room to accommodate the breakfast rush hour.

The reason why we are not giving Hotel Universo a higher rating is due to the fact that sleeping in the upstairs loft was very uncomfortable. The lack of air circulation made the room very hot and stuffy. There was at least a ten degree difference between the first floor and second floor. Even when the weather outside was cold, the upstairs area was very hot and stuffy. I can only imagine that it gets worse during the hot and humid months in Rome. We asked the front desk if they have air conditioning or even a fan that we can plug in, but said no. We literally had to leave the window and drapes open the whole time just to let some air flow into the second floor, but the person sleeping on the first floor ended up freezing. With the window being open, loud annoying noise from the trash compactor woke us up every morning at 7am. Noise from cars and people was also constant until late in the evening. Despite having good things to say about the hotel, the uncomfortable nightly experience we had made us decide that this hotel did not provide a good value for us.
