“Perfect place to stay when visiting Rome”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2013

We went for a long weekend in October, booked through Expedia with a flight from our local airport. We arrived by taxi from Fiumicino airport (about half an hour at a fixed rate) and were greeted and offered prosecco and canapés while we were checked in.

Check-in staff were very helpful and gave us a map of the city and explained where the main sights were. All the key sights of Rome are within walking distance of the hotel (15-20 mins) which makes the location ideal.
We were shown up to our room (a Richard Meier room ) overlooking the back streets. It had self setting air conditioning plus windows that actually open, a large shower cubicle and large bath, his & hers basins and lovely Bulgari toiletries.

A complimentary bowl of fruit and bottle of wine were delivered to our room later while we were out to lunch. Each day small treats were delivered - canapés, cakes.
Breakfast was a buffet with plenty of choice. The breakfast staff were lovely, remembering our drinks order each morning and speaking French, English, German to the cosmopolitan mix of guests.

We had Sunday lunch at the rooftop terrace (we checked beforehand that it would be open as it is weather dependent). It serves mostly vegetarian food with some fish dishes -ideal for me! The portions were very generous and I could only manage 2 courses despite the food being absolutely delicious.
All the staff were very courteous and welcoming and we felt really at home. We will definitely be back.

Room Tip: The Richard Meier rooms are newly decorated in a modern style

I stayed here recently for 2 nights at a rate of 335 euro/nt and was disappointed. It was my 2nd stay and I had really enjoyed the last visit. Here are the pros and cons:

PROS:
1. Great location just off the Piazza Navona
2. Large selection of breakfast items at buffet
3. Bulgari Au The Blanc toiletries

CONS:
1. The staff on the rooftop terrace were very condescending. We took a bottle of wine up there to enjoy a glass or two around 6 pm and all the tables were empty but one. (These were all wrought iron patio furniture, mind you. Nothing fancy). Nevertheless, when we brought out our wine a staff member soon appeared to ask if we were staying at the hotel. We said yes and showed him our key. He looked a little peturbed that we had our own wine and asked us to move to a table for 2 even though there lots of free tables around. We felt very unwelcome.
2. The hotel was noticeably full of loud Americans talking about their first world problems ("Colin is having such a hard time deciding between Harvard or Yale Law School"....).
3. The hotel's red and gold decor, as well as our sparse dark brown room, seemed stuffy and dated.

Definitely will be staying somewhere else next time I visit Rome as this was not good value for money.

Roberto V, Direttore at Hotel Raphael, responded to this review, October 14, 2013
Dear Guest,

we thank you for the time you spent in writing your comments about your stay at Raphael Hotel. Your feedback helps us to constantly improve the level of our service.

We are very happy to acknowledge that you appreciated our locations, in the heart of the Eternal city, our breakfast buffet and our Bulgari amenities.

On the other hand, we are very sorry to learn that your stay did not meet your expectations in this second time, and would like to express our sincere apologies for that.
Be sure, that we will investigate on the inconvenient you had on our rooftop terrace and appropriate actions will be taken, in order to avoid similar problem in the future.
For this reason, we kindly ask you, if you don't mind, to let us know, if you remember who was the waiter or the waitress on duty and approximately the date when it happened.

I am also very sorry to hear about the noise and loud people you were talking about, above all because we know all our guests as well-behaved and quite people.

As we can deduce, you probably stayed in a classic style room, where there are few red and gold details: we would like to inform you that, we do have also rooms in modern Style, designed by the renowned architect Richard Meier, where the main colors are oak wood and beige.
We sincerely hope, you will have the chance to see them in a future occasion.

Dear Sir and Madame, We hope you will consider to come back to our Maison, and in that occasion we will be honored to offer you a free dinner or lunch for two people in our restaurant, and a free upgrade to a Richard Meier Executive Deluxe.
We kindly ask you to let us know, if you don't mind, your e-mail address, in order to take note of our offer and to comment with more details what you have written.
Since we have a very transparent and guest oriented attitude, being deeply sorry if you have felt unwelcome, we are ready to refund in some way this bad emotion you had.

We remain at your complete disposal for any information you may need
Best Regards
Roberto E.Vannoni and the Hotel Raphael Team

So many good things to talk about this Hotel.

Pros

1. We had RomeCabs.com drive us from FCO to the hotel. When we arrived the hotel staff was there to greet us. They were so professional and happy to see us. They helped us out of the Mercedes and escorted us to the lobby. We were very tired after traveling 24 hours from California. Once inside, we were offered Cappuccino's and very tasty treats. The check in was painless. The Front Desk staff went out of there way to assist us. You certainly will feel special there.

2. The room was beautiful, very clean, and quiet. The room had blackout shades. They worked great. It had air conditioning we controlled (that's a must). And, a very comfy bed. The room was great!

3. Location is the best. Located at Piazza Navona, we were centrally located to see everything. And, we did! The hotel staff gave us a map of the area. Explained all the points with recommendations on how to see it all. They also recommended places to eat while we were out touring.

4. The Rooftop restaurant at Hotel Raphael is incredible. The view is GREAT! The food and service was absolutely wonderful It made for a very romantic evening. I had the Carbonara. The fiancé had the eggplant. Both were excellent.

5. The hotel staff thanked us for staying with them. The manager also thanked us. This hotel truly appreciated our business even though the hotel was full.

Con
1. The shower glass needs to extend out a little more to prevent water from hitting the bathroom floor.

I highly recommend this hotel.

My husband and I recently stayed at the Hotel Raphael and absolutely loved it. The staff were friendly, professional and helpful. The room immaculately clean with a comfotable bed abd Sky TV. The location is perfect...close to everything yet quiet. We walked to all the major sights--the Coliseum, the Forum, the Vatican, Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon. This hotel is great. Highly recommended.

I stayed here for four nights in October 2013. This hotel was easily one of my top five hotels stayed in, anywhere. The rooms are spacious by European standards and very comfortable. There is a rooftop terrace with spectacular views over the Roman skyline. Location near Piazza Navona is another plus. I would definitely stay here again, despite the high price.

We really lucked out by staying in this hotel in Rome. We found the location to be ideal to walking to nearly all of the major sites. It's right off Piazza Nevona which is among the nicest in all of Europe. The service was also fantastic. The only downside is they do what most 4 star hotels do which is charge you double the cost for drinks on their rooftop terrace. Can't a guy just have a 5 Euro Peroni?

We came just back after a 4 nights stay at Raphel. It is a very expensive hotel, but it is so many qualities in this hotel, that it is almost worth the price. Rooms and public areas are great, especially the restaurant at the roof.
However; the best is the staff that really makes you feel well, in a familiar and relaxed way. Some Relais & Chateau hotels are unfortunately too formal.
All were nice, but a special thank to Steven and Zuzana in the restaurant/breakfast and Cinzia in the reception.
