Stayed 4 nights this month with family in two rooms and found the experience to be generally pleasant but found the hotel to be a good 4 star than a 5 star. Our rooms were spacious adjoining rooms on an interior courtyard, lacking a view but very quiet. The hotel is quite large and dominated, during our stay, by American visitors. The hotel features an indoor pool that our teenagers enjoyed, a decent included breakfast and a professional, if often distracted, staff. The location is a bit out of the way for most sightseeing, restaurants and shopping although close to the Villa Borghese and a subway stop. Flat screen TV's, air conditioning and other amenities worked fine. The hotel fails to capture the charm of this special city but is a reasonable option, especially for families.

Stayed at the Westin for 4 nights in August in a very nice room. Hotel is lovely but scratch the surface and there are some problems.
One of the two small elevators was always broken-every day so only one elevator for all the guests. Main floor washrooms were beautiful but toilets always plugged up and water faucet would come off in your hand if you needed to use it. Front desk staff pleasant but concierges all short on information and very huffy. I was there alone with my daughter initially, and I noticed a big change when my husband joined us a few days later. That is not good! Breakfast was lovely and plentiful. Staff very courteous in restaurant.
Do not be fooled into thinking the hotel is "at" the Spanish Steps. It is not. It is a good 15 minute walk to the steps. Not too bad going there but not so great walking back in the dark at night. The hotel says it is a 5 minute walk--everything requires conversion!
Had to call maintenance several times before they got room airconditioner working properly but eventually someone came who knew what they were doing. Lovely hotel but best for someone wanting to be right on the via Veneto-not because they want proximity to Spanish Steps.

  • Liked — large room
  • Disliked — took forever to get air conditioning to work
  • Tips/Secrets: — There are many lovely hotels in rome that try a little harder to make up for shortcomings

Spent four nights at this hotel at the end of July with my wife and our two teenage kids. We took advantage of Westin’s program where the second room is ½ price for accompanying children. We could not have been more pleased with the accommodations. We had two huge connecting rooms on the 4th floor. The rooms were large, modern and had very nice furnishings including plasma TV’s. The all marble baths were very spacious. The hotel definitely has a prestigious, high end feel to it. The hotel guests consisted of business people as well as a fair amount of American tourists. Everyone (doorman, front desk, restaurant, baggage handlers, etc) was friendly. The only exception was the concierge personnel. During our 4 night stay, I had 3 separate occasions to ask them a question on different items. While they were professional, they were not overly accommodating. Still we enjoyed the hotel, its location and would stay here again.

I'm not sure why there are so many negative reviews about this hotel. We stayed for 7 nights - one fully paid room, one booked using starwood points. The rooms were fantastic. Beautiful decor, as spacious as most junior suites I've visited, and excellent, personal service. There were no loud nightclubs (very quiet at night). We traveled with our three young children and were given two very large adjoining rooms. I would definitely recommend the hotel. When booking, it is best to ask for the rooms without the typical red/green Italian decor.

We stayed for three nights in June, and had a fabulous stay. I used Starwood points to booked our room, and we were upgraded to a larger room due to my gold status. The room was very well appointed, clean and elegant. The room was still roomy even though we had a rollaway bed for our child (€45 per night). As a matter of fact, this was probably one of the largest room we've had, even in comparison to U.S. hotels. They did say at the front desk that this was "like a mini-suite." The bathroom had a bath tub with a hand-held shower plus a separate shower stall. All the staff members were wonderful, and we really liked the area. There was construction on a property next door, and they started banging away at 8 a.m. but this did not put a damper on our stay since we were usually up and about by 7 a.m. for an early start in the city. Food and drinks were overpriced in the hotel, and even in the surrounding areas. We had light, inexpensive breakfasts in the Spanish Steps area, which was a nice 15 to 20 minute walk from the hotel. While not in the heart of most tourist attractions, we liked the quiet the area offered since it was still accessible to a lot of interesting sites. There were ATMs across the street from the hotel, making it very convenient. We walked all over Rome, except when we went to the Vatican. We took a taxi to St. Peter's and cost around €9, in heavy traffic. Rome is one of my favorite European city, and I would definitely stay at the Westin Excelsior again.

  • Liked — The elegance of the hotel and the wonderful staff.
  • Disliked — Overpriced food.
  • Tips/Secrets: — If you want to use Starwood points to book a room in the summer, reserve as early as possible! This hotel gets fully booked in the summer.
