We had such a fantastic time at this Westin Excelsior in Rome! We had booked two adjoining rooms for us and our children and the rooms were large, with high ceilings, beautiful chandeliers and marble baths. The beds were super comfy as well. The hallways to the rooms were wide, well lit and lovely, and the clientelle chic. I can't understand how people can complain about this hotel. Our air conditioning worked perfectly and was adjustable in both rooms with both temperature and low/medium and high fan settings. After being given a list of things we wanted to see, the concierge Paolo worked out a perfect walking tour on a map to take us to everything in an orderly fashion. We walked everywhere from here. The hop-on hop-off bus they recommend that leaves from across the street is great. We also went everyday for breakfast (our plan did not include breakfast) to the Cafe de Paris just across Via Veneto. We stood at the bar like Romans and had our espressos (1 euro) and crossaints, and even got sandwiches from them sometimes in the afternoon if we were too tired to go out for dinner. We did have breakfast one day at the Cafe H Club Doney in the hotel & it was great! Eggs were 10E, not so bad for a hotel of this calliber. The neighborhood is gorgeous & safe. Very upscale. We walked easily to Galleria Borghese (an exceptional museum in the middle of a park), the Spanich Steps and the Trevi Fountain. My children loved the pool. As opposed to other reviews here, the pool and all facilities were spotless. We were provided with plush, fluffy pool towels when we arrived. No extra charge for it either which was great! The lobby was gorgeous and the staff couldn't have been nicer. Everyone always greeted us with a smile. A beautiful hotel in a fabulous location! A perfect vacation for our family!

The room was pretty amazing with the high ceilings and decor. But for a Westin, I wouldn't say I was super impressed. The rooms do need a bit of a renovation, and the staff were not that efficient and friendly. DO NOT take their recommendations for dinner as the one they suggested for us was a major tourist trap! Restaurant pricing was 5 times more than usual, and the entire place was full of tourists. Go to a local place by just walking around and looking at the menus and people. I'd say find another place if you're going to spend this much $ on a nice room!

The Excelsior has a great location in central Rome near the Villa Borghese, and is a grand old structure. But the service, while attentive, is hotel chain variety, although there are some good exceptions at the concirge, restaurant and desk. The physical elements of the hotel are the worst -- and slipping badly, carpet is worn and dirty, bath tub had mold and a damaged ceiling, the A/c didnt work well, the pool would be a very nice amenity but is was also dirty and needing repairs -- --easy fixes that Westin is obviously ignoring- at the cost of letting top name of the Excelsior decline. IF you can get a very good rate it might be worth a stay, but only if.

We stayed at the Excelsior Rome June 5th -8th. We could not have been happier. The lobby has gleaming , shiny marble and opulent chandeliers.I did not think it looked tired at all. It was old world charm to me. Mariarita checked us in. She was WONDERFUL ! She greeted us with a smile and gave us a free upgrade as we had hoped for. We got a 2 room suite, one with a huge living/sitting area with Bang-Olefson TV and 3 windows overlooking the fashionable Via Veneto. The bedroom was separate and with the heavenly bed. The bathroom was all marble. The windows were soundproof and we did not hear the street noise at all. But whenever we were in the room we turned the A/C off and drank in the view of one of the world's most fashionable streets dotted with cafes, good looking people, and Versace. I don't know , who would NOT enjoy that. But everybody is different.
We had a free lunch in our plan and had it at the side walk cafe at Doney..the H club. Breakfast was included daily in our rate. We also got the 4th night free plan , so at 489 euros per night, that was great !
The Concierge staff was magnifico ! Esp Paolo. Hi Paolo ! He made us great reservations at nice restaurants in walking distances. It was great !
I highly recommend him to anyone travelling there. He was so helpful.
We had a tour of Pompeii and Capri on 2 days. I used VIATOR and toursitaly.com. I highly recommend them. They were very efficient and the tour was well organized.
Now , a WORD of CAUTION. This has nothing to do with the hotel. It is about pickpockets. I am posting it here , since so many people use this site. We were well alert and I had my purse laying flat across me, with one hand on it. My husband carried his money in the front pocket. NO CC or wallets. We had taken the taxi from the train station to the hotel on the 1st day. The driver spoke good english and was suave. When we arrived he pointed to the meter and said 25. So we got out and gave him a 20 and a 5. Then he said 5 extra for the luggage. So we looked thru my purse and my husband looked into his pockets. When we looked up he was holding a 10 and a 5 ...this puzzled us but we did not think about it and gave him the 10 that he now needed. Later, when we were in the room my husband suddenly said, when the taxi driver got into the car he looked thru his billfold, pulled out a 10 and put it in his pocket. My husband saw that and was surprised. Only then we figured out what he had done. He had ingeniously pickpocketed us ! While we were fumbling thru our purses he had put away our 20 and got out the 10 from his pocket! Con artist ! I told the front desk but what could they do? But do look at the cab number on the side and report it to them. This I learned later. Anyway for the rest of the trip, I announced the money aloud as I handed it to the person. This was a great scam. I hope everyone benefits from this incident.

Grand hotel in a prime location. Overall, we were pleased with our room as it was quite comfortable and roomy with a lovely marble bath. However, the guest rooms and public spaces are in need of some refurbishing as we found the carpets to be stained and walls in the hallways scuffed up. Some of the furnishings were tired, as well. With that being said, we would definitely return to the Excelsior or recommend this property to friends.
