We stayed at the Excelsior Rome June 5th -8th. We could not have been happier. The lobby has gleaming , shiny marble and opulent chandeliers.I did not think it looked tired at all. It was old world charm to me. Mariarita checked us in. She was WONDERFUL ! She greeted us with a smile and gave us a free upgrade as we had hoped for. We got a 2 room suite, one with a huge living/sitting area with Bang-Olefson TV and 3 windows overlooking the fashionable Via Veneto. The bedroom was separate and with the heavenly bed. The bathroom was all marble. The windows were soundproof and we did not hear the street noise at all. But whenever we were in the room we turned the A/C off and drank in the view of one of the world's most fashionable streets dotted with cafes, good looking people, and Versace. I don't know , who would NOT enjoy that. But everybody is different.
We had a free lunch in our plan and had it at the side walk cafe at Doney..the H club. Breakfast was included daily in our rate. We also got the 4th night free plan , so at 489 euros per night, that was great !
The Concierge staff was magnifico ! Esp Paolo. Hi Paolo ! He made us great reservations at nice restaurants in walking distances. It was great !
I highly recommend him to anyone travelling there. He was so helpful.
We had a tour of Pompeii and Capri on 2 days. I used VIATOR and toursitaly.com. I highly recommend them. They were very efficient and the tour was well organized.
Now , a WORD of CAUTION. This has nothing to do with the hotel. It is about pickpockets. I am posting it here , since so many people use this site. We were well alert and I had my purse laying flat across me, with one hand on it. My husband carried his money in the front pocket. NO CC or wallets. We had taken the taxi from the train station to the hotel on the 1st day. The driver spoke good english and was suave. When we arrived he pointed to the meter and said 25. So we got out and gave him a 20 and a 5. Then he said 5 extra for the luggage. So we looked thru my purse and my husband looked into his pockets. When we looked up he was holding a 10 and a 5 ...this puzzled us but we did not think about it and gave him the 10 that he now needed. Later, when we were in the room my husband suddenly said, when the taxi driver got into the car he looked thru his billfold, pulled out a 10 and put it in his pocket. My husband saw that and was surprised. Only then we figured out what he had done. He had ingeniously pickpocketed us ! While we were fumbling thru our purses he had put away our 20 and got out the 10 from his pocket! Con artist ! I told the front desk but what could they do? But do look at the cab number on the side and report it to them. This I learned later. Anyway for the rest of the trip, I announced the money aloud as I handed it to the person. This was a great scam. I hope everyone benefits from this incident.

Grand hotel in a prime location. Overall, we were pleased with our room as it was quite comfortable and roomy with a lovely marble bath. However, the guest rooms and public spaces are in need of some refurbishing as we found the carpets to be stained and walls in the hallways scuffed up. Some of the furnishings were tired, as well. With that being said, we would definitely return to the Excelsior or recommend this property to friends.

This is a lovely hotel for a family, business travelers or a couple. The location is convenient for sightseers, within walking distance to most attractions and to a metro stop. There are restaurants in the vicinity, would recommend going beyond the very first one in sight being the Cafe Paris directly across the street. It is a lovely cafe but there are many more. The Excelsior is in a prime location right next to the US Embassy, within minutes form the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, etc....

The actual experience at the Rome Excelsior paled in comparison to the brochure's vivid photos of a once grand and luxurious hotel. It is obviously past its prime and in need of sprucing up. The bed however, was up to the usual Westin standard.

The Via Veneto location is beautiful and within quick walking distance to the Villa Borghese park, which provides a welcome respite from the noise of the city. After a 5 night business stay , we moved to a 4 star hotel (also overrated) but which was far more reasonable for the leisure portion of our stay in Rome.

Stayed in May over a 4 day weekend (Bank Holiday). Tried using my Starwood Gold card to get an upgrade, but unless you're related to Gianluca's uncle through a second cousin, forget it, this is Italy and Starwood should be under no illusions they can enforce any other standards!

Room was shabby in an Italian baroque style, not what I had in mind, not what the pictures indicate and with red all over the walls, it's difficult not to "see red"

The lobby a massive, cold unused space had little to commend it but was overtaken by the European Energy Ministers, who had a conference over 2 days of our stay.

Housekeeping when they respond are the best thing going for this place. Despite chasing, they do have plugs (don't expect standard European to work here) and they did make up our bed into a king size.

The concierge: what can I say, here's my best advice. Only ask for a restaurant recommendation if you can afford to pay €200 per meal.

Any extras: The only 5 star quality to this hotel is their exhorbitant prices: whether it be breakfast, €30 for a continental! (seriously we're talking bread and coffee, no extras), to the internet service (although I guess they are like all hotels on this one), to the bar.

And finally, some marketing spiel describes this hotel as having been refurbished with Marble bathrooms..... Ever heard of composite resin? Having worked in the industry I can reliably inform you it is plastic, occasionally bearing some resemblance to marble, but let's not kid ourselves, it's plastic and that sums up my view of this hotel, a pretty mediocre, low quality, man made experience
