My daughter an I stayed at the Holiday Inn Rome West in April 2008. I was delighted with the hotel and its services. The rooms were small but very clean and attractive. The staff were very nice and most spoke English and were very patient with my poor attempts to practive speaking Italian to them. We did not dine at the hotel except once as there are so many places in Rome to dine or snack. I particularly liked the hotel shuttle service. The shuttle makes many trips between the hotel and the city of Rome every day at convenient hours with the last trip to the hotel from the city at 9 pm, which allowed us to see the city at night. The shuttle service from the airport to the hotel was not at a time that fit with our flight but the shuttle service placed us at the airport in a timely fashion on our day of departure. When we arrived in Rome, we decided to take public transportation rather than a taxi from the airport to the hotel which turned out to be a big mistake and took us about 3 hours. We were hoping to save money by doing this but it actually cost us about the same as a taxi would have cost and dragging our luggage through the train station, metro trains (lots and lots of stairs!!!) and to the bus stop was wearying to say the least. I would urge anyone making this trip to take a taxi if the hotel shuttle is not available at the time you arrive. The public transportation was great and for about 4 euros we purchased a day pass and could ride the metro trains and buses all day. Walking around worked best for us and we were able to experience much more of the city and culture on foot. There are several stores within walking distance of the hotel and in one you can purchase a cup of delicious cappuccino and a croissant for 1 euro. I would definately choose to stay at this hotel in the future and in fact I already started planning for my next trip there. We were not able to figure out how to use the phones there or our cell phones which was due to our own ignorance rather than the fault of the hotel. I was able to receive incoming calls on my cell but couldn't make outgoing calls. The next time I will explore this further before my trip. There are computers at the hotel and 5 euros will purchase 30 minutes of internet service which is how we stayed in touch with our families at home. I purchased euro travlers cheques but found that very few places accepted them. Some places didn't take credit cards either. We found the best way to get cash was through the Rome version of the ATM. These are called "Bancomat" or "Poste Italia" and both have services in several languages. Hope this review is helpful.
