My past travel experience in Europe has enlightened me to the limitations of the hotel star rating system so it was important to me to find a hotel that is affiliated with a brand name I had personally experienced. Early this year we stayed at a Quality Inn hotel in Canada (Kamloops, BC) and we had a pleasant experience. Based on this experience, I decided to booked four days at the Nova Domus hotel, a "four star" hotel, while in Rome during the last week of July.

The hotel advertised it offered parking so I assumed it had a reasonable parking facility. My assumption was incorrect. There were no parking stalls so I had to leave my car keys with the hotel reception so they could park the car in there "lot". Moving in and out of the parking lot was too convoluted so I did not bother using my car during my stay.

The room we were given was of poor quality. The carpets were dirty, the showerhead holder was broken, the ceiling had a large water stain, and the TV remote control was broken with a missing part. The shelf in the bathroom sagged and it looked as if it would fall. One of the beds fell apart and when a piece came off we could see the duct tape that was used to hold it in place before it came off.

I asked the hotel to give me another room but they refused my request. I was promised the showerhead would be fixed right away but it took two days to repair.

The cleaning staff was friendly but the reception staff was not very helpful. They did what had to be done and they did not extend themselves in any way.

Other less significant irritants should be noted but I will skip over these expect for one more item. Walking outside the hotel along the connecting sidewalk, we had to be careful to avoid the numerous piles of dog excrement. Apparently, the hotel did not consider it important to maintain its surrounding perimeter.

I decided to stay and live with the above-mentioned deficiencies because I had prepaid my booking and changing hotels would involve another inconvenience I did not wish to inflict on my three children.

I do not recommend this hotel and I encourage you to find another facility. Rome is a beautiful place to visit. I will go back to Rome some day soon but this time I will be a little more careful about the hotel I select.

My wife and I made our first vist to Rome for our wedding anniversary - so expectations were high. The hotel is, contrary to some reviews, very near the Vatican and linked sites, and is close to 2 Metro stations which connect you to all the other sites within minutes - so location is fine.

Our first impression of the hotel was that it was well appointed - but clearly they didn't think we warranted their best standards - one side of the 4th floor corridor has plush, well appointed rooms, but ours looked not to have been touched for 20 years - it was ok - just very tatty - a door made of formica, very poor tv. no tea making facilities, shower leaked over the bathroom floor and the toilet seat broke (being cheap plastic and very old) and was not replaced during our stay.

The restaurant was quite expensive and the food not of the freshest - all bread, bread sticks and even wafers in ice cream were stale and breakfast fruit juice was so watered down you couldnt tell what it was. Most annoying about the restaurant is that in 2 non-breakfast uses of it they brought the wrong order both times! I know my Italian isnt great - but I did point at the menu listings too!

Staff were all polite and this made a good first impression, but only until you had an issue. For instance, the only way to get any drinks was from the bar, or from the mini-bar. And as it was close to 100 degrees (upper thirties) getting water, when there are no shops within walking distance, was a major issue. There are no drink machines at the hotel. The bar tender was a nice guy, but the first time I went to the bar to ask for a couple of cokes he asked me to come back in 20 minutes because he was too busy stocking the shelves to serve me! Then all of the drinks were warm for the whole evening - beer, coke, wine, water - everything. A gentle comment about this got a shrug.

However, the main thing that would stop us ever going to or recommending this hotel were the arrangements we made to get to the airport. 24 hours before our flight we asked reception how they recommended we make the transfer - they advised a taxi and said they would book it. The next morning before breakfast (due to leave at 8.30am) we checked and reception told us the taxi had been booked. We were in reception in plenty of time. As we waited another group came down and asked for a taxi to be ordered for the airport. A taxi arrived at 8.30 and we put our bags in only to be shooed away by the receptionist very crossly. Apparently the group who had been waiting 4 minutes were due this taxi - ours had not turned up. The attitude of the hotel changed at this point - we reminded them that they had booked our taxi and that we were about to miss our plane - they told us it was not their problem if a taxi didnt turn up, and we could not expect to take someone elses taxi (from the same firm by the way). We asked them to reorder a taxi which I don't believe they did - so in the end we had to resort to the street corner to try to flag a cab down. All in all it ruined our weekend to have argue with a very rude receptionist. Who says the customer matters in this world?!?!

The Hotel was of a good standard internally and the room we had was quiet and the air con worked fine. Breakfast fare was basic but OK, service at the Reception courtious and responsive to our needs.
Location was not the best as it is agood stroll from the Cipro Metro with few restaurants of interest along the way. We later stayed for our last night at a Hotel close to the Termini station and realised that if you are on a budget this is the area to stay for ease of travel by Train / Metro.

We couldn't find the hotel! Definitely not in a convenient spot. After booking online, and being assured that the hotel was close to the city (our 1st trip) - we were very disappointed to arrive in Rome and spend 3 hours looking for this hotel! After cab rides, asking locals, looking up maps, and wandering in 40 degree heat with our luggage we called the hotel and were told that we were "close" and should keep walking.

We never found the hotel! Upon returning to the centre of the city we called back to the hotel, and the lady at the counter was rude and unhelpful. They kept repeating that the hotel was "close" and did not make any effort to help us find it.

We ended up staying at the Best Western - Roma Globus, which was very close to the city, had great facilities, a fantastic buffet breakfast, and relatively helpful staff. I would not recommend the Nova Domus - after NOT staying at the hotel, and wasting 1 day of a 3 day trip to Rome, they still charged me for the accomodations.

Kudos to hotels.com who were very helpful in resolving this issue for me upon my return.

I stayed here with two other family members for three nights as part of a tour group. We had a room on the 2nd floor. The room opened out onto a terrace which is accessible by anyone on the floor. Some renovation work was going on so there was scaffolding set up outside one of the windows and the window shade could not be lowered in front of the door.

We had a room with a sitting room that had two pull out twin beds from the couches, a short hallway which the bathroom was located off of, and then a 2nd room with two twin beds pushed together. The pull out couch was comfortable, although I was suspicious at first because the end of the bed sagged a bit. Bathroom was spacious, although there were no hooks to hang any towels/clothes. The tub leaked a bit, but wasn't that much of a problem (yet....perhaps for future residents of that room it will be). The walls that border the hallway are very thin and through the night could hear people returning to their rooms and slamming doors.

The restaurant in the hotel is very good and we ate dinner here one night. Prices are very reasonable and they do not charge the "cover charge" that many restaurants in Italy apply to your bill. Breakfasts were also very good. There is an outdoor terrace that you could eat on in nice weather.

Front desk staff were very helpful in answering questions and giving directions. Keys to your room have to be turned in and put on a board behind the desk before you leave. Don't take your keys out with you as the keyfob has both the hotel name and your room number on them and so if they are stolen, some not so nice person could have easy access to your room. We had an unfortunate situation when checking out in that someone charged a dinner for two from the restaurant to our room. However, the man at the desk let us go without much to-do as he saw that we were three and not two. Also we had been at a tour dinner the night before so there was no way we could have also been in the restaurant.

The hotel is located in a residential neighborhood so there are a few restaurants/pizzerias within walking distance, but it really isn't a location for prime shopping. One block down there is a market that is open every day selling all sorts of fresh fruit. When it comes to sightseeing around Rome, this hotel is not located in a prime spot. The closest sight is the Vatican & St. Peter's Square which is still a good 10-15 minute walk and includes a climb up some stairs. Even the train station is a good walk away. Others in our group took about 30 minutes to walk over to the Trevi Fountain. There are bus stops along the road so if you are going somewhere far and don't care to walk, your best bet might be to inquire at the desk as to the best bus to take for your destination.
