Has portraits of all the popes running along the top of the walls of the basilica, absolutely beautiful big amazing old roman building.
A breathtakingly enormous basilica containing the chains that bound the Apostle Paul when he was a Roman prisoner. We were awestruck by the majesty and spirituality of this church.
This fascinating basilica is one of the four Rome's papal basilicas and it was built in the 4th century. The basilica is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it is also a Holy See property. It is situated very close to the San Paolo metro station. The interior is fascinating (just look at the celling) and the facade is also great.
Absolutely magnificent nave. Probably enjoyed it all the more as I didn't have expectations. Easy to get to on the metro.
Be sure to go into the front courtyard--pillars and palm trees make this church special. The interior, especially the gold-covered ceiling (real gold!) is gorgeous.
