We walked to San Clemente on San Giovanni in Laterno, after visiting the Colosseum as it is very close by. We are lost for a few minutes, then able to find our way.
It is a 3 tiered basilica with a 12th century church on top of a 4th century church on top of a late 2nd century temple. The 12th century Basilica di San Clemente is beautiful with painted ceilings, mosaic walls, and medieval stylings (has choir in the middle). To see the "Triumph of the Cross" is enough of a reason to see this beautiful basilica.
To go down to the lower levels costs 5 euro. The first level is scary, creepy but can view the spring water rushing through. It is very cold and it seems that it has not been excavated much other than the steps down. They tried to make it more accessible by putting in standing lights and have some information on placards. The bottom level is barely excavated and looks like cubby holes. It is darker and colder than above. We explore everything that we can and then make our way back up to civilization. We skip the bookstore as the employees do not seem very friendly.
It is a wonderful piece of history and not crowded at all. It is definitely worth a visit.
