we just happened into this 12th century church one evening waiting for a restaurant to open. what a find! apparently this church was built over the home of St. Cecilia - a wealthy woman who dedicated her life to God and was martyred. first they tried to suffocate her and when that didn't work, they attempted to behead her. that didn't work either but she did die from those wounds. we were a little creeped out when we first saw the statue beneath the alter but then came to find out that it is a marble statue of her remains that they say have never deteriorated.
