“A wonderful experience!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2010

My husband, college-age daughter and I spent a week in Rome at the Lancelot Hotel. We had a large triple room with a private patio that was spotlessly clean and comfortable. I had read some comments about the "small" bathrooms but we found ours more than adequate with great water pressure and big, fluffy towels. The best part of our experience was the warm, helpful staff who all spoke excellent English. They helped us with any request including airport pick-up, restaurant reservations, and scheduling a tour to Pompeii (which I recommend). They even went out of their way to provide us with an early breakfast on the day of our tour. We also enjoyed the beautiful public spaces available. This hotel is within view of the Colosseum, a lovely and safe area. Although it is true there is not a great deal of shopping or good restaurants close by we did find one excellent restaurant within walking distance, Ostaria Da Nerone, and ate there or in other areas of the city.

As others have said, this is an oasis. We traveled with 3 kids (ages 4,6,15) and all were happy. Family Room was comfortable for all of us, breakfast was great (contrary to other reviewers!!) and the walking distance to great pizzerias, the Colosseum AND a neighborhood farmers market could not be beat. Staff was amazing and a delight.

Mrs. Khan and staff provide a friendly gracious retreat at Hotel Lancelot. This in an "old world" hotel with nice accomodations just blocks from the Colloseum. The hotel is comfortable and filled with antiques with clean and spacious rooms reached by lift. Several peaceful parlors are provided to sit and read the many art books Mrs. Khan has provided and there is a small bar, as well. An enclosed indoor courtyard was available that our family used for get togethers before dinner. We understood it was used for dinners in fine weather and the menus looked appealing, but we did not take dinner at Hotel Lancelot. Tasty complete continental breakfast (Great cake and pastries, yogurts, fruit, cheeses, some meats and cereals) with very good coffee and brewed tea in silver urns in a nice large room. Quiet neighborhood with nice morning walks nearby to Colloseum area and two expresso bars. Be sure to visit the local churches! We took buses and taxis to other areas of Rome from two blocks away. I did walk to other areas of Rome from this hotel, but most would want a bus or taxi. Highly recommended and reasonable rates for Rome. Would stay at Hotel Lancelot again.

This is a lovely and well presented hotel in a side street close to the Colosseum. It is a quiet area and felt very safe. We had a standard room which was spacious and clean with a comfortable bed. The public spaces are beautifully laid out and relaxing.

The staff at the hotel, both the family owners and other staff were all friendly and attentive. The breakfast arrangements are welcoming, with round tables for sharing conversation and ideas about places to visit.

We have already recommended this hotel to friends and will return here the next time we visit Rome.

We spent two nights at The Lancelot. The staff greeted us with a very warm welcome; the room was spacious for Italy, the bed a good size and fresh, crisp linen. Light and delicious breakfast and lovely sitting areas with bar open until 10 pm.
Great shower , lift and green and perfumed leafy courtyard areas- a refuge from the craziness of Rome. Lovely quiet street, fantastic location with good restaurants and cafes nearby.
We were particularly impressed with the warmth of the staff and the great location._ 5 minutes walk to the Colosseum, very easy to catch buses and trains to anywhere in Rome and staff who could not have been more helpful. If you do stay here, and like a strong massage, ask reception to book Carmello for you!!
We were sorry to leave.

The Hotel Lancelot was a decent hotel in Rome. Nothing super special, but probably better than many hotels in Rome and Italy where the quality is generally poor, so expectations are low. In North America, this hotel would be at best 3 very, very average stars. But as I said, when in Rome... this is pretty good.

Pro's:
1. Location: Well sort of. If you want to visit the Colosseum and Forum, this is a good location. But it is a bit remote in the sense that you are not going to go out to the street and join the locals in an evening walk - the neighborhood is pretty dead and it is a ways to the "heart" of Rome. That said, the metro is a 10 minute walk away, and a taxi stand is 5 minutes away. There are some restaurants in the area too. Like 90% of restaurants in Italy, the food is fine, but never, ever good or great.
2. Room 60: This "suite" is located on the top floor and overlooks the rooftops with a clear view to the Colosseum. Beautiful. The terrace itself is cute in a simple, rustic and somewhat untended way. Too bad there is no room service option as it would be a great place for breakfast or dinner! That said, the room is expensive and the decor... well see below.
3. Service: Some people are drooling about the service here. Not our experience. Nothing bad, but nothing overwhelming. "Pleasantly neutral" is how I would describe it.
4. Breakfast: Decent enough - most all people should come away satisfied, although the coffee and tea would make any Italian and Englishman, respectively, cry from the poor quality.

Con's:
1. Location: See above.
2. Rooms and decor: The hotel decor looks like something from a 1970's museum, something you would find at your old Italian aunt's place in Anytown, Italy. Or a set from a Fellini film. Like the vast majority of hotels in Italy, the Lancelot does not invest in capital refurbishments. Cracks, stains, mold, windows don't quite close, rusty patio furniture and the like abound. Why does this seem so prevalent in Italy? Economics 101: supply and demand - little of the former and a lot of the latter! Too bad - it leaves a bad taste.

Some people have commented on the Internet - I think it works fine, even if it is pretty unique to set up.

Overall: A relatively decent option for Rome. But be warned, "decent" in Rome and Italy would not make the grade in North America! But if there is a next time (Rome itself is disappointing), I'll consider something else.

Great location, just a few blocks from the Coliseum and its Metro stop, and they’ve got a nearby bus stop that gets you to the Vatican. Rome is manageable and fun. The Lancelot’s breakfast is very very good, and the front desk people all speak English, are eager to please. Francesca was the greatest help. Our travel agent had us originally at a $700 per night place- that’s not our style so we found this place on the basis of recommendations from family and it was great (and a good value) Very secure, fun to come home to. We had a balcony, big room. Bathroom and beds were great. We were blessed with great weather.
