We were on our way back to the States after an 8-day tour of Italy (1 teacher, 6 teenagers) when we had a cancelled flight. We were to be "stuck" in Rome for 2 extra days. Since the kids didn't have any more money, I had to pay for all rooms, meals, etc... On the recommendation of our tour guide, Fabrizio, we booked 2 nights at Casa San Giuseppe. After 7 nights in 3-stars all over Italy, this place showed us what an Italian hotel should be. It was VERY clean, quiet, centrally located, and had big rooms with very efficient A/C. Best of all was the location. Every meal we had in the neighboring restaurants was amazing. From a miniature pizzeria just a block outside the Hotel door to the cafes along the alleys, we enjoyed what I felt was delicious, genuine Roman cuisine. Just across the street, the banks of the Tiber River came alive at night with bars, music, shopping and good, clean fun times. We also were able to walk to many nearby sites (Piazza Navona, Vatican City, Campo Fiore, etc…) Since I was paying, I was especially happy with the pricesat the Hotel and the nearby restaurants. Tasty, filling, affordable, amazing food. The kids said that these 2 nights were the highlight of their trip! I am planning a trip to Rome for me and my family. The Casa San Giuseppe will be our hotel.

We stayed in two hotels during our two week stay in Rome, this was the second one. It used to be a convent and still kind of feels like one (which was to our liking; for example, it is tiled, rather than carpeted throughout and the rooms are very spacious by European standards, ). The hotel is located in the Trastevere neighborhood on the other side of the river, which is popular with locals and has a very active nightlife. I loved the location of the hotel. The bridge to the main part of town is only about a two minute walk and you could reach major landmarks within a ten minute walk. There aren't that many hotels in the neighborhood. We checked out three smaller ones before coming upon this one and they were all full so we were happy that they had a room for us because I wanted to stay in Trastevere to experience a kinder and gentler village-like feel while in Rome. This neighborhood fit the bill, where it's common to see laundry strewn across the narrow, cobblestone streets.

There were numerous restaurants and cute shopping boutiques only a few feet from the hotel. The restaurants were filled mostly with locals and the food was uniformly good. We experienced excellent panna cotta at one of the restaurants and at a local bakery ate the best tiramisu we've ever had. The hotel staff was extremely polite and helpful (in stark contrast to our first hotel) and there was an internet cafe in the lobby which guests could use for the very reasonable rate of 1 euro per half hour. The main downside was that our room faced the street and there was noise from people at nearby bars and restaurants until early in the morning. It wasn't that big a deal to us though because we went to bed late anyway since we never adjusted to the time. One or two of the days there was also some normal street noise later in the morning which I'm sure I only noticed because we generally didn't wake up until noon. If you think any of that would bother you, you can probably request a room in the back which I would think would be quieter since it faces the outside parking courtyard of the hotel. We didn't request it because we were already settled into the room and we liked the view. There is also no bellman but that wasn't a big deal for us, even though we had a lot of luggage and were traveling with a baby.

  • Liked — Spacious room, helpful staff, excellent location
  • Disliked — street noise

I returned last mont (November 2005) in the hotel after one year since the first time which was in april 2004. The prices have been simply doubled (now a double room costs 150 €, one year ago it costed 90 €) and the services are the same. The sisters are not yet managing the hotel, which is now probably managed by a profit company. For the same prices there are hotel in the area with best services, and cleaner.

Dear Sir/Madam,

Please note that the management did change, but the old tradition of our hotel has been cured and maintained as before.Hope your stay with us during a holiday(which obviously cost's higher). But we do have low/high season specials year-round.

Kind Regards
Stefano Bossini

We LOVED this little place. We found the staff at the front desk very polite and they spoke English quite well. The room and bathroom were clean and spacious. The hotel was wonderfully quiet. (Finally! an undistrubed night's sleep!) Air conditioning was available, although wasn't needed in May. A full breakfast by Italian standards was served: yogurt, pastries, fruit, cereal, juice and coffee. It was close enough to walk to the historic center sights and to the Vatican as well. I would say the walk took about 15 minutes. We also walked to Campo di Fiori and the Pantheon one evening. The neighborhood was great and authentic. There was a little pizza place around the corner that was WONDERFUL! At 100Euro per night in Rome during May, it was a steal. I would recommend a stay here without reservation. It was better than most of the places we stayed at on our entire trip in Italy.

just returned from 3 days in rome. we stayed here because of the location, and our first choice was booked.
this hotel was suprisingly quite nice, our room was large and very clean. the location is perfect we walked everywhere, except to the Vatican. the H bus will get you to and from the train station and cental rome.
the only draw back that I found here is that you can not expect the front desk to give you any help of any kind, the english is very minimal, they are polite but not friendly, maybe diffrent if you are fluent in Italian.
stay here if all you are looking for is a reasonalby inexpensive clean room with good location, and great beakfast. this was by far the largest room we stayed in while touring Italy, but the most aloof front desk staff. look for the english man who runs "the almost cormer book store" it is located near by on one of the little ally's. he is a great source of infomation and very friendly.
