“Potentail gem waiting for a make over”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2013

We needed a reservation last minute as our booking for somewhere else was an issue and we were already in Italy. We have family in Rome who secured this room. Good location with private parking for a fee. The room was super tiny but clean and manageable for European standards. The terrace which really can't be used (because it is not set-up, which is a shame) has a beautiful view. Not accessible by public transportation but you really should be walking when in Rome. It took about 25 minutes to reach the Vatican (with a baby stroller mind you) and 25 minutes to reach the Pantheon. Don't get me wrong this place needs a face lift and has no amenities, BUT its very affordable, clean, good location in Rome. We didn't get to check out the local neighborhood as we had the baby but it looked happening! I say if you are travelling on a budget this place is a good choice. Last to note the breakfast was very simple but within reason.

Casa San Giuseppe was a very pleasant stay. It is within walking distance of all the major sites in Rome, and it is in the heart of Trastevere with great restaurants and night life. The rooms are spacious, clean and basic. The hotel staff are helpful and friendly. Great value.

This was a reasonable but basic hotel in a great location let down by a lack of facilities (no iron available, no wi-fi, no bar) and slightly distant service. The hotel is in the Trastevere area and is 20-30 mins walk from most big attractions although Trastevere has plenty of bars and restaurants and is very close to the river bank market/cafe area too. If you get the option for room only then I would do that and get breakfast somewhere else as we found it to be very basic indeed and not very appetising (although a decent coffee could always be had, but then it is Italy after all) On the plus side, if you have a car then they have a very nice and big car park out back with security gates.

This hotel had a very nice room with tile floors. We had a separate entry room with armoire. The bathroom was roomy but the shower was tiny. We went on a walk one evening and I felt like I was in a fairy tale it was so beautiful in the surrounding neighborhood. The maid that took care of our room was very friendly and also worked at the breakfast, making us wonderful cappuccino each morning. They had a nice variety of food and juice, as well. The guys at the front desk are not overly friendly, but one of them even looked up a bunch of information for me just because I inquired about something -- I did not even ask him. I am not accustomed to showing a hotel my passport or having to drop off the key to the room every time we leave, but everything worked out fine. There were people loudly partying on the street at night, so if you are a light sleeper be prepared for that. We walked absolutely everywhere in Rome from this location. My only complaint was that the wifi did not work on several of our devices and no one seemed to be able to help with that. They said we could not use the computer(s) they have down in the gathering area, either.

Room Tip: If you really need quiet at night, look elsewhere -- same with wifi. If you can live without those...

After cancelling my initial reservation at another Rome property, a friend of mine recommended that I search in the Trastevere area of Rome for accommodation. I stumbled on the Casa San Giuseppe after a long, grueling search on Booking.com and made the reservation as it seemed to be the only reasonably priced location in Rome at the time of my travel. I was expecting just a place to flop that I wouldn't spend a lot of time in but what I got was much better than that.

First of all, the location of the B&B is unbeatable. It is only a block or two away from the Tiber River in a well lit, young and hip area of Romel. There is no shortage of restaurants and bars to choose from and the area stays crowded well into the night so there was never a time that I felt unsafe anywhere near the hotel. From the B&B, it is only a 15 minute walk to the Colosseum and it is an easy walk to make; just follow the river. Trastevere can be a very confusing area of Rome to navigate but the B&B is not hard to find due to its proximity to the river. I never got lost trying to get back.

The B&B itself is quite clean and it also has AC which is important especially if you are in Rome in June! The front door closes at midnight I believe but there is always someone on duty so all you need to do is press the buzzer and you will be let in. The staff are all very friendly and ready to help out. They have maps and a lot of other information about the city. Despite being in a nightlife oriented section of the city, the hotel is very quiet and I never had any problem sleeping. The couches in the lobby are a little old but not terrible. The lobby is the only place in the building where Wifi is available.

My room was actually larger than a standard US hotel room which was a very pleasant surprise because most hotels I have stayed at in Europe have rooms that you can barely move in. There was a separate office area with a desk, the bedroom, and the bathroom. This was room 108. You have to give your key to the reception every time you leave the hotel but all you have to do is ask for it back on your return and they give it to you. No showing of ID or anything like that. They just remember who you are!

Breakfast the following morning was adequate if not anything special. It was plenty to go on until lunch. Sometimes finding a seat in the dining area was tricky because there are not that many tables but I was always able to eventually find somewhere to sit. Overall, a great experience and I would recommend it to anyone!

Room Tip: Room 108 opens into the courtyard behind the hotel. I believe it is the only room in the building th...

My family had three nights in Casa San Giusepe and felt that is was a great hotel at a fair price for the area. Breakfast wasn't much cop, but there was a lot of it if you wanted. With so much good food around it didn't really matter. The location was perfect. I was able to walk to the the Forum and then to the Vatican to meet people the home again. Heaps of great restaurants very close as well. Staff were helpful and pleasant enough.

We stayed there for 5 nights while in Rome in mid-May. The rooms are spacious and the bed was comfortable. Since it is a convent, we were not surprised or dismayed that it was spartan. The shower was tiny and really needed to be replaced as the panels were coming out and it was dingy looking. Staff was fair. The guy at the desk, while friendly, was not particularly helpful as he was not specific about answering location questions for us. Breakfast was typical for Europe - not what Americans would eat but adequate. Noise was definitely an issue. The A/C worked OK in our room but not our friend's. The street noise is too loud, too late to leave windows open unless you have earplugs.

The best thing, excluding the reasonable price, was the great location. The Trastevere is a hip part of Rome, a huge change from 25 years ago when it was not recommended that tourists cross over to that area. There are great restaurants and gelato bars. It is a few blocks from the Ponte Sisto and fairly close to major sights. We took a cab up to the Pinco Gardens one morning and snacked at a delightful cafe bar before doing our own walking tour back to the Casa stopping at the Piazza del Popolo, the Spanish Steps, the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain and more. i would recommend the Casa as long as you realize it is not meant to be the Hilton.

Room Tip: Ask for a higher floor. Less noise the higher you are.
