I have been to Rome three times, and finally managed to make the trek to San Giovanni in Laterano. I have no idea why it is so overlooked in guidebooks and reviews. This is a VERY LARGE cathedral and it is ornate with some outstanding features. Beautiful and intricate marble floors, frescos, a beautiful apse, exquisitely detailed 16th century Medici ceilings and incredible reliefs and sculptures. St. Bartholomew by Pierre Legros is simply amazing!
If you enjoy the cathedrals, this is a MUST SEE place on a trip to Rome. I have seen St. Peter's, Barcelona Cathedral, Duomo in Milan, and a host of others, but this would probably rank second to St. Peter's on my "need to see" list.
The outside is very deceiving on this cathedral, and perhaps that is the problem. But when you walk in, it is that much more breathtaking because you aren't sure what to expect and you are going to be impressed.
