“Must try in Rome”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2013 via mobile

We had a wonderful experience at this restaurant. Food portion was big so dont over order. We ordered 2-starter, 2-main and could not finish them (good food). As other viewers mentioned, owner is great host. Thanks for the great evening, Maurio.

“The Highlight Meal of our Honeymoon!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2013

To say that this is the hidden gem of Rome would be a drastic understatement. The food quality reminds me of eating meals of 3 times the cost on Palm Beach Island, FL, only better!!!!!

The chef is a extremely warm and accommodating. He stops by every table (maybe 10 total so make an advanced reservation) and explains each option in colorful detail. After selections are made, wine pairings are suggested by the chef as well.

Machiavelli's Club is an intimate dining experience that my wife and I will NEVER MISS whenever we return to Rome!

“Best meal at Rome”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2013

Our experience here was wonderful. Mauro greeted us warmly and even asked for our names. He gave us some time to read the menu, then came back to explain everything. We had already decided what to order, but after seeing his enthusiasm and passion in giving us the details of every dish, we let him finish before giving him our orders. The starters did not interest us, so we gave it a miss and ordered one first course (Pappardelle with wild boar ragout of braised dark beer, 11 EUR) and two main courses (beef cheek braised in Barolo wine, sirloin steak with vintage cognac and cocoa, 15 EUR each).

The pasta was so damn good that we couldn't bear to finish it. It was definitely one of the best pastas I have ever eaten in my life. The beef cheek was also excellent, being soaked in the Barolo wine for 24 hours. And the sirloin steak was fantastic too; the sweetness of the cognac and bitterness of the cocoa were blended very well to give a wonderful flavour.

I asked him to recommend a red wine to go along with our food, and he gave us a wonderful full-bodied wine that only costs 3.50 EUR per glass. I ended up ordering two glasses for myself.

This place was not easy to find, being located in a passageway that looked as if it was hiding anything except a fantastic restaurant. Strongly recommend visitors to make reservations and visit this place.

“A MUST TRY when you are in Rome”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2013

We knew we will get a good experience and thus, we have made this place our last stop before we leave Rome, we were not disappointed!

First thing first, the location. The restaurant is not as easy to find as it is hidden in a dark alley with no signboard or directions indicating that the restaurant is situated within a private property when its surroundings are mainly shophouses. It was only when we stood outside the main lane and pondering whether to go in or not and then a nice guy from the other shop who probably guessed we are going to that restaurant told us that we just need to walk in to reach the restaurant and he was right!

The restaurant opens at 7.30pm and like what other reviewers mentioned, it is not opened on Mondays so do take note! The restaurant was dimly-lit and it is relatively small as the maximum capacity is definitely not more than 30 pax so RESERVATIONS ARE A MUST.

Inside, Mauro greeted us and he was very thoughtful in explaining the menu to every guests and recommends the wine that can bring out the best in the food. Here, we can sense the passion he has for his food.

For the first course (pasta), we ordered a Pappardelle with Wild Boar Ragout of Braised Dark Beer to share. The pasta was soooo good that my partner couldn't bear to finish it quickly (because we were really hungry) so we ended up savouring the dish slowly. For the main courses, we had the Sirloin in Vintage Cognac with Crushed Cocoa Beans which the sirloin turned out to be a perfect pink! The sweetness of the cognac also complements with the bitter cocoa beans. Next was the Beef Cheek Braised In Barolo Wine, Cream with Pistachios which the tenderness of the meat melts in your mouth instantly.

The food here is really affordable and the service is exceptionally good among the eateries in Italy, in terms of price and value. The first course costs 7 euros, main course costs 15 euros and the red wine was about 3-5 euros per glass.
