Albergo del Sole is without a doubt the oldest operating hotel in Rome, something like 600 years and counting. It is by no means luxurious or comfortable in the modern sense. However, the apartments that look over the Pantheon square offer something no other hotel in Rome can; a magical view into history. Late night and early morning the square is quiet and looking at the entrance to the Pantheon unobstructed is someting you can't buy. The top level apartment has a roof top deck of small porportion but overwhelming views. Rooms in the main building are long overdue for an update, but bathrooms are modern enough and paying more you would get a lot less. Breakfast for reasons I can't explain in the central courtyard of the main building are delightful. The slightly grumpy morning hostess has just the right touch with coffee or expresso drinks. The pastries are light as air and there is more breakfast here than at the best hotels.
