This hotel was recommended to us by some Italian friends who hadn't stayed there but knew it was next to the Pantheon, a great location, and had a 4star rating. In summary, don't go! The hotel is the oldest in Rome and it felt like it. Stained ceilings, holes in the floor, very, very small rooms, expensive and terrible service. The second half of our stay we changed hotels and stayed at the Albergo Hotel del Senato, next door. It was everything the the del Sole Pantheon was not.

A very special experience: to stay in the heart of Rome, with the Piazza della Rotunda just outside your window, but with all the comforts of home. We stayed in the family suite in the annex to the hotel, which has an amazing view of the Pantheon. We had a bedroom with a small living room, where our son slept on the sofa bed. The bathroom was spacious with a jacuzzi tub, which we didn't take the time to use. There was also a flat-screen tv with movies, but it was really unnecessary for us. The annex, where the suite is, has a seperate entrance from the hotel on a side street.
The piazza is lively at all hours, and we enjoyed taking a late afternoon break in our rooms to relax and watch the moon rise over the Pantheon. The sounds of people talking below were actually quite nice.
The hotel staff are very welcoming, and the breakfast is really exceptional there with various antipastos, such as artichokes or asparagus, with something new everyday. The coffee, if you ask for capucchino, is actually quite good too, which is not always the case at Italian hotels.
We intend to come back!

This was my 5th trip to Rome and the 2nd time I stayed at the hotel. I returned because primarily because of the location but also because the first stay was very pleasant - - charming room and friendly staff. Relative to other hotels in Rome, the price was not out of line. I find Rome hotels to be among the most expensive in Europe. My experience the second time was similar to the first. This time I stayed in Room 312, a small double, OK because I was by myself. Room overlooked the square and the Pantheon. No trouble with noise because the windows shut very tight. I am a light sleeper and it would have bothered me if I couldn't shut out the noise. Great breakfast. Friendly and helpful staff. Loved the jacuzzi in the bathroom. On the negative side, the room was showing some wear but it was very clean tho small.
Relative to the Raphael, this was less expensive, MUCH friendlier, room about the same size, bkfst included. But make no mistake, you are paying for the location.

The air conditioning did not work in either room and we did not sleep a wink all night. When we made a complaint to the front desk staff they did not apologize or offer a discount. It was kind of yucky and we would never stay there again.

Rooms are too small even for Rome standards.
