Shame about the bad reviews. Everyone has heard of this place, why not stop by on your way to the Colloseum? It's a tiny bit out of the way, 2 blocks, but worth it.

This huge field is grown over but the imprint of the original track and stadium seating is still there. It is used as a dog park now. My hotel was very close and I got lost getting back to it very often (you WILL get lost in Rome, it is very confusing and hard to navigate, just enjoy it). Whenever I found Circus Maximus, I knew I was close.

One night we were lost for and found ourselves walking alone, down the length of Circus maximus at 2AM. There is a certain energy here if you are sensitive to these things.

The area is very safe to visit at anytime.

Where Emperor Palatine used to hold his sporting events. You have to take a picture from across the street because it's so massive.

This free site is well worth a short visit. It is completely excavated, and it's easy to imagine it filled with thousands of screaming spectators while chariots raced around. Now it's a nice dog park, a great place to walk, and a wonderful reminder of the glories of ancient Rome.

Ok...I wasn't expecting to see Charton Heston racing around in a chariot, but compared to other sights in Rome (Vatican, Colosseum, Forum etc) I was expecting to see something...

It is shown on most of the tourist maps as this idyllic spot with the old decaying buildings still in place, but it's a dirty, dry dusty field covered in broken bottles and other rubbish...

You can make out where the track was, and if you have watched "Ben Hur", where the central grandstand was...and there are some steps on the high side, which didn't look that old....but the only thing of any interest was a couple of ruined buildings and a Roman tower at one end of it...

All in all, totally disappointing....don't waste your time !!
