Yes, rooms are large&plush and available amenities (pools, spa) are what you'd expect from a Waldorf property, but all other 5-star features are missing. First, this hotel is located so far from anything you'd visit in Rome that you'll end up spending a bundle on taxis or limit yourself to the hours dictated by the hotel shuttle to downtown. But I give them points for at least having a shuttle. The punctual and safe drivers were probably the best staff we came across at this hotel. The valet and bellhops outside were useless. I show up with luggage and a cane, and no one even open the DOOR for me, much less take my luggage. The front desk was not too friendly and I was not treated like a VIP guest (I am "only" HHonors Gold and used points for my stay, but I still expect courtesy). I was not given my choice of room upgrade vs. access to executive lounge, which would have been appreciated since the Internet point was $0.50 a minute! Each time I sought to speak with the concierge, I waited at least 15-20 minutes. We had 2 people in my room but they only provided 1 robe, no slippers, and 1 loofah to share (gross!), despite repeated requests to housekeeping to rectify these shortcomings. We'd come back from sightseeing around 8pm and room would not be turned down. We'd request turn-down and it would not be done until about an hour later, an hour in which we were exhausted and wanted to go to bed! We'd go to the included breakfast buffet and, while the labels indicated a sumptuous assortment of goodies, the platters and chafing dishes were almost always empty and we would have to ask multiple time (3 on average) for a simple a cappuccino or a glass of prosecco. Who would actually PAY $60USD a person for that sort of breakfast experience?!?!? Luckily, not I. I always brought tips for the waitstaff, but they most certainly did not deserve any of it. The little boutiques in the Cavalieri were so sad -- small and either empty or out-of-date (very 1960s feel).
In any case, I left all except the last comment for the manager, and of course I have not heard back a single word. The contrast between my most recent Hilton Stays -- a $89 room at the Hilton Washington versus this $1250/night room in Rome -- showed me that you cannot beat plain and simple CUSTOMER SERVICE! Plush as the Cavalieri is, the beauty is all just skin-deep. I would tell people to NEVER pay to stay here. On this trip to Italy, we also spent some nights at the Marriott Grand Flora in Rome and, in comparison, the location and staff at the Grand Flora beat the heck out the Cavalieri, even if the rooms were a lot less fancy and a lot smaller. Overall, big thumbs down.
