“Luxury hotel but you pay for the pool”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2013

Stayed here for a special birthday and the hotel was just as I had hoped with spacious rooms of the high standard you would expect. Having a 9 year old the choice of pools were a big factror in choosing this hotel. It isn't a cheap hotel and we were shocked to be asked for 20 euros per day extra for the use of the pool. More is you use the outside pool and sun beds. That's a first - so you should factor that into your stay budget. The free shuttle bus to the centre is good but even in April it was full well before the depart time so get there early in peak months.

We are so glad to read that you have enjoyed your stay, we would like to inform you that our guests could use the pool free of charge and the charge mentioned is for the sun beds and service provided. The view of the city is amazing and the hotel provided a gret place for my wife and I to get away and enjoy the luxury this hotel has to offer. The transport to and from the city center is also a nice benefit that saves on walking and cab fare.

Room Tip: The Imperial suites offer great ammenities well worth the upcharge.

Our room was beautiful, I still have happy flashbacks of the spa, the breakfast was amazing, rooms were great, views were UNMATCHED. I'm glad I went big in Rome and decided on this hotel. Yes it was far from the airport, yes it is located on a hill. The key here is If you want that balance of relaxation in your vacation then this is perfect. There is a shuttle that takes you into the center of the city for free so just hop on and you're in the mix.

Stayed here during our Hooneymoon and it was the best hotel we stayed in! We were a little concerned about the fact that it was not in the middle of Rome but the free shuttle bus ran regularly and it only took about 20 minutes to get to downtown Rome. The rooms were a good size, great restaurants and fantastic views of Rome. We also enjoyed the pool and will definately be staying here next time we go to Rome!

The exterior of the hotel in the front is in need of major cosmetic repair. The dolphin water fountain has not been maintained, the backyard landscaping is not groomed to five star standard , or to basic standards for that matter. We requested a non smoking room and were placed in a smoking room. Our room was extremely hot when we checked and and noticed the air conditioner would not turn on. We called the front desk and inquired about the air. They said they do not turn on the air conditioner this time of the year. They said they would deliver fans for us to use in our room. And most insulting to our stay and experience is that we are Hilton Honors Diamond Status members and apparently this means nothing to Waldorf Astoria. I was left with the impression that Waldorf Astoria is a share partner of Hilton and members are treated equally and fairly.Instead, we were treated like third class citizens and as if we are a bother to them. When setting up our reservation for the hotel six months ago; we confirmed all benefits we would have as Diamond memebers including access to the lounge. When we arrived today, we were informed we could not have access the lounge. We asked to speak with the manager. The clerk assisting us said there was no manager available to assist us. Her name was Emilia Bangrazi and she states she did not understand why we were upset as she was just quoting their policy. As if this is an excuse to mistreat Diamond status customers who spend in excess of $20000 a year with Hilton and simply want to enjoy a lounge when at the hotel. If for a glass of water or to chat....Finally Emilia did get someone who was supposed to be in management, Martina Coletti. Martina explained that Emilia was in training and so was quoting the policy of Waldorf Astoria. Martina Coletti is just a Front Desk Supervisor and said she does not have any authority; however, the General Manager would be in at 3:00 and we would be able to address the matter with him at that time. We returned to the hotel in the afternoon and asked to speak with the General Manager. we were told that he was in a meeting and he would return a call afterward. An hour had passed and he had not returned a call. We called again asked to speak with the General Manager Nikoli Iakoni. This person to the phone and said as per policy of Waldorf Astoria; he could not allow us access to the lounge area unless we wanted to pay 69 euro per person per night to have access.....

Dear Guest,

We would like to thank you for choosing Rome Cavalieri, Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts during your recent visit to the Eternal city and for taking the time to submit a review regarding your stay.

We regret reading of your disappointment, but please rest assured that we appreciate our HHonors Diamond members as they are our privileged and loyal guests.

Our Guest Relations agent, Front Desk Supervisor and Manager on Duty were only trying to explain the HHonors Diamond benefits as follows:

*Complimentary room upgrades based upon availability (excluding Imperial floors).
*Complimentary daily breakfast at L'Uliveto restaurant.
*Two complimentary beverages per stay at the Tiepolo bar.
*Access to The Cavalieri Grand Spa & Outdoor pool.
*Complimentary WiFi service.
*Complimentary newspaper (upon request).
*2 complimentary bottles of water daily.

We would like to put to your attention that the 'Executive lounge' is not available in Waldorf Astoria properties, but at Rome Cavalieri we extend further benefits to our HHonors Gold & Diamond members like the full buffet breakfast to reward their loyalty.

As the Imperial rooms including access to the Imperial club are not subject to complimentary upgrades, our guests could choose the e-standby upgrade option online, that lets you choose an upgrade at a discounted rate and if available on the check-in day modifies your reservation automatically. Also another option to reserve an Imperial room or Suite is by using premium reward certificates whose points vary based on the category reserved.

As our colleagues mentioned, the air-conditioning is turned on during the summer period and at the moment due to the fluctuating cold wave, it is still not in function, but we are glad to inform you that we are currently installing the 4 pipe system that lets our guests enjoy air-conditioning and heating all year long.

Looking forward to welcoming you back on a future occasion.

Kind regards

This was a family trip for a week to Rome. Sitting atop Monte Mario, the hotel has an unbelievable view of Rome and Vatican City. We had a room on the view side and spent lots of time looking through binoculars from the private patio (completely closed on three sides, with mirrors on both sides accentuating the views) seeing where we were going or where we were every day. Bedding menus provide something like 10 different pillow types. An "airlock" sound door closes off the room from any hall noises. The staff was generous will still and sparkling water bottles every day. The breakfast buffet was astounding with pretty much all styles of breakfast from around the world represented. The spa was spectacular (we only had time for a tour, regrettably). The concierge services as well as the front desk for check in, check out and change, were excellent.

Note - the view comes with a small catch. This hotel is "outside the walls" and isn't the kind of place where you can just walk out the door and see the heart of Rome, and then head back mid-afternoon for a break. We found that getting into Rome and back, although easy, was essentially a day-long commitment (unless you want to catch a taxi back). The hotel has a courtesy shuttle that drops you in the heart of Rome (and returns). It runs once an hour. Tip: Don't show up at the last minute and expect to get on. We were turned away a couple of times due to capacity. We love to walk, though. After 24 hours of travel we were very ready to walk to Vatican City - but it's about a 30-45 minute walk. Several nights we walked back from the Vatican or from the Cipro Metro station - and it's uphill, after a day of already walking all over Rome. So - given where you are at the end of the day and the time, it may take time to get to the shuttle pick-up, and the timing has to be right. We found ourselves taking the shuttle in, but finding other ways to get back. Don't get me wrong - the shuttle's fantastic, the views are worth it, and we're glad we stayed there.

This rates among the best hotels we've ever visited, around the world. Our biggest regret was that Rome itself was more compelling and we weren't able to spend the time at the hotel that it deserved. What a great problem to have - great hotel, or Rome itself... Hmmmm......

Room Tip: You want to be on the view side. No question. Pay up for it if you must. This is a view you will...

I was there for meetings only. None of the staff was able to tell me where to locate the organizers of a meeting there. Several of us had drinks by the poolside. They charged 10 EUR for orange juice, which was not fresh squeezed at all and tasted as if it came out of a juice box. The hotel is very elegant and is fine for people who are wealthy.
