We sayed in Trastevere region of Rome and can recommend it.
Accomodation in this area is less expensive than in the centre of Rome so you can get more for your money.
Travelling to the centre of Rome is no problem. Crossing over the river from the via Trastevere there are lovely views up the river, all the attractions are within walking distance for people who enjoy walking. We even walked to the Vatican through the park where there were great views over the city.
There are also buses along the via Trastevere across the river and to the train station. You can buy a bus pass for a reasonable price from the money you have saved on accomodation.
Trastevere is probably best in the evening, along the banks of the river there are stalls selling snacks, drinks and other goods. In the side streets there are many small restauants and often street entertainment in some of the piazzas. The area is busy in the evening, it feels very safe, without being claustrophobic.
On Sunday morning there is a big street market about half way along via Trastevere on the left out of town, a wide variety of new and used items, including clothes, at reasonable prices.
