“Beautiful rooms and ideal location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2012

What a lovely place! A friend of mine told me about this and I wasn't expecting such beautifully decorated rooms, it really is full of charm. Very comfortable, great bathroom and really near Termini station, so it's very central. There's a Metro stop at the end of the road, too! Really enjoyed it here.

Blue Hostel is not a hostel at all. Its rooms are large, airy, beautifully decorated and it is located just a few minutes away from Termini - Rome's main train station and subway stop. Asking for directions to return to the hotel was easy and there were plenty of buses that stop there.

Ercole (the owner) was very helpful. He gave great recommendations for restaurants. I enjoyed every single restaurant he recommended.

Blue Hostel is truly a gem that offers great value. I would highly recommend it to anyone!

I stayed at the BlueHostel for one night while travelling alone and would recommend it for anyone looking for accommodation that is in a great location, near a cool area for bars, restaurants and quirky shops, clean rooms with all facilities including fridge, a/c, hair dryer, kettle, and the individual decor is more like a boutique hotel than a hostel. It was very quiet and Ercole who met me on arrival was really helpful in making recommendations. I would definitely go back to the BlueHostel on return trips to Rome.

Selfishly, I almost didn't write a review of the Blue Hostel - in a last ditched attempt to keep the secret of this sparkling gem of a find to myself. However, having come to my senses, I realised that not to write a review when you've had such a fantastic experience would not just be selfish - it would be a crime against the owners and a travesty against fellow-minded travellers. The owners of the Blue Hostel deserve all the praise they receive.

Firstly, the Blue "Hostel" name does not do this place justice. It's too high class to be a hostel. Don't get me wrong, it's not a hotel either - nor a B&B (but who needs breakfast when you have a thousand delicious bakeries to choose from a stone's throw from your doorstep?). No - this place is more like having your own chicly-decorated and bijoux little flat, right in the centre of Rome. Except without the noise of traffic, without the hassle of cleaning it yourself, and without the exorbitant price tag you'd expect for a similar property in such a superb location.

Think wooden-beamed ceilings, walls in Parisian grey, tasteful pictures of retro Roman ladies, French windows looking out over a peaceful courtyard, spotlessly clean and modern bathroom, carefully chosen lamps, the sound of bells floating through the window, and all the mod cons you'd expect from a hotel (air conditioning; fridge; TV; fantastic security).

Secondly, the situation of this place is simply superb. If you're arriving in Rome from another Italian city, or flying in from abroad, it's likely that you'll be coming into Termini by train, and the Blue Hostel is about a 6 minute walk from here. You've barely got time to get irritated by your suitcase wheels bumping over the cobbles by the time you round the corner onto the stunning Piazza di Santa Maria Maggiore and the Blue Hostel just beyond. The Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatina are a 10 minute walk away, and many of Rome's most famous piazzas (Piazza di Spagna, Piazza del Popolo, Piazza Navona) are within easy walking distance. The Blue Hostel is also in Monti, one of Rome's buzziest neighbourhoods, with a vast array of wine bars, cafes, pizzerias and restaurants to choose from all within stumbling distance. My favourite places were Ai Tre Scalini (quirky wine bar on the Via Panisperna where the staff danced to Elvis) and the lovely Panella on the Via Merulana - great for breakfast or for a quick slice of pizza on the hop at lunchtime.

Finally - a word about the owner Ercole. He met us when we arrived and could not have been more courteous or welcoming. He helped us with our suitcases and then, having shown us to our room, helped us locate the key sights we wanted to see by circling them on a map he gave us of Rome (even listening to my requests to find a Caravaggio or two).

But being a true Roman (with the hair and shades to match), he was able to give us some really valuable advice on what we should do that was more off the beaten track: suggesting his favourite places to eat or go for a glass of wine, his favourite gelateria - the place with the largest selection of Roman gelati - the best place for an espresso. And all in perfect English - which was certainly welcome and refreshing after the ego bruising I had received trying to speak Italian in a cafe earlier (Romans on the whole are not that accommodating!)

I ended up leaving the Blue Hostel on the first day with - well, a bit of a crush actually.

Grazie mille, Blue Hostel, for really making our stay in Rome so memorable. We'll definitely be back!

My wife and I have just returned from an incredible trip to Rome, and the Blue Hostel played a huge role in making it so. For a start, the location is perfect: Termini (Rome's main bus and train station) is a simple 5-8 minute walk away; the very trendy district of Monti is on your doorstep and all major Roman sights are within easy walking distance, (particularly the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatino, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Piazza di Spagna for the Spanish Steps and Piazza del Popolo). Our room backed onto a very quiet courtyard so apart from hearing the beautiful bells from the wonderful Basilica on the Piazza di Santa Maria Maggiore, it's very quiet.

Secondly the rooms are stylishly decorated, spacious and importantly, spotlessly clean. The aircon worked well and thankfully, it was quiet! We were so happy to spend time in our room, and wanted for nothing whilst there.

Thirdly, Ercole (the owner) was so helpful: he was very welcoming when we arrived, and he patiently talked us through a number of superb places to eat (he's local so you get some top advice), places to visit (a number of which were off the beaten track) and gave us an overview of things we needed to know to make sure our time in Rome was fun and memorable. He was very friendly and told us to call him anytime if we needed to.

I would highly recommend The Blue Hostel to anyone visiting Rome: top marks for location, top marks for the rooms and cleanliness, and top marks to Ercole and his team, who make a real effort to make your stay with them a huge amount of stress-free fun. Grazie mile, The Blue Hostel!

We have spent 4 wonderful days in rome, 2 families of 4. Whilst the stairs are a bit of a challenge the location is wonderful, just down the road from the rome terminal station. It was lovely hearing the chimes from the santa maria maggiore church, apart from them it is so quiet! The rooms are spacious and service perfect. We actually had trouble with pickpockets and the owners of the hostel were very helpful - they also suggested some great restaurants. The free wifi worked really well.We walked from our hotel to the vatican via the pantheon and piazza navona and it was easy.

My girlfriend and I had an incredible time at the Blue hostel. The best in Italy and probably in Europe. It was very clean, comfortable and the service was superb. I never felt like we were staying in a hostel. It was way better than that.
