I recently stayed at Dem Guesthouse for 4 nights with my boyfriend. I booked the Dem Guesthouse because it was the cheapest place I could find which wasn't too far out of town. It has received some decent reviews on this website so I decided to take the plunge. I booked six weeks in advance, and all other similarly priced places were much further out of town. Dem Guesthouse is really close to Termini, which is great for getting to when you've just got off the bus and just want to crash out! Depending on how fast you walk it doesn't take very long to get to the other main attractions either. The Colluseum is only about 20 minutes away.
We found it easily, but I did google map it first so I knew what the street looked like. You are looking for a large wooden door, with the number 48 in the wall next to it, opposite the Hotel Morgana. The lobby has a huge flower pot with one set of stairs going off to the right, the other to the left. You want to take the right hand stairs, and Dem is on the first floor. The building has a lift if you need it. The walls could do with a lick of paint, and there are a few holes in the plaster but thats just part and parcel of an apartment block. The guesthouse itself is very nice, well presented and clean. The staff speak english, and were very welcoming. The man who greeted us showed us around the room, and then the rest of the house. There is a communal kitchen, and internet access. We didn't use it but it was an unexpected bonus. We were given a set of keys so we could come and go as we pleased. I noticed umbrellas by the door should it rain and we were given a nice little map of Rome which highlighted all the major tourist spots.
In the room there is sky tv, a mini fridge, a safe, and air conditioning. Devid had emailed me a week before to ask what time I was checking in, (he was fine with me checking in at noon) and what sort of bed I would like. I asked for double, and they had pushed two single beds together. Towels were provided in the bathroom, as was shower gel, shampoo, a hair dryer and even toothbrushes.
A breakfast is provided each day on a tray in the room which I liked because then you don't need to get up at a specific time and go sit with all the other guests in a dining room. It consists of cracker bread, jams, cartons of fruit juice, UHT milk, cereals, biscuits and something sweet. The first 3 days of our stay it was a little chocolate pie, but on our last it was a chocolate roll. There was also coffee and tea making facilities in the room.
The house is really quiet. We heard a few guests check in, or going out but that was it. We didn't even hear or see anybody else who lived in the apartment block. The area looks a bit dodgy, there is a lot of graffiti around but thats the neighbourhood around the station. We never felt unsafe, nor did we see any homeless people or rubbish. There is a lot of restaurants and hotels along the same road which entertain a lot of visitors so there was always people around. We had a street facing window, and it is noisy with the window open, but as soon as its closed you can't really hear anything.
Overall the guesthouse was a pleasant place to stay. I would be happy to stay there again if I ever return to Rome.
