Like some of the other reviewers, we stayed at the Hotel Lunetta next door and since Rome was rainy and cold in January, we didn't want to venture too far away for our dinner experience. I read the other reviews and figured that Hostaria Costanza sounded like a great place, plus we saw one of the waiters having a cigarette at the front gate one morning and he seemed friendly, so we went ahead and booked a table. Thank goodness! It was an amazing experience and one I will certainly repeat on my next trip to Rome.
The restaurant is built on the remains of the Pompey Theater from Roman times, and pieces of this ruin are incorporated into the walls, like other establishments on the same block, and this makes the place very atmospheric. Almost like stepping back in time and similar to the other restaurant we tried nearby - Da Pancrazio.
Everything we chose was delicious, but the best of all was the lobster spaghetti for two. Somehow I expected shelled pieces of lobster meat, but the pieces came with the shell on and we received a variety of implements to get the meat out of the shells. It was very exciting. And what a tasty sauce - as we say in our house 'you would get up at night to eat it'!
Once again, we were the only non-Italians in the place and that made for a buzzy atmosphere, especially when the man next to us had his dog on his lap, and then another lady came in with a dog in a bag, which hopped out to visit with the dog on the lap. All very entertaining.
We topped off our meal with a delicious bottle of Rosso di Montalcino and we were in seventh heaven. Yum all round, plus lovely waiters with a bit of chat. I'll definitely be back.
