“Authentic Roman cuisine at a fair price”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 15, 2013

My wife and I lived in Rome for four months, teaching in a semester abroad program. This was absolutely our favorite restaurant! Nothing fancy, but good, simple Roman food. We ate there 44 times (no, that is not an exaggeration - I counted the receipts on our expense account!) There are tourists there, but there are also Romans, who know good food when they try it. The owner, Paolo, is unbelievably generous, and we are always treated to prosecco, or limoncello, or some exotic dish (like nettle pasta - really!), all for free. The food is excellent, the prices are incredibly reasonable, considering you can pay three times more in tourist restaurants nearby. Not sure what the bad reviews are all about, but we found this place to be consistently good.

“Spectacularly good food!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 15, 2013

We found this little restaurant by complete accident whilst wandering back to our hotel from the Vatican - we are soo glad we stopped for some lunch!!
All the tables were full when we arrived, so we waited for a couple of minutes. The waiter brought us out two glasses of Prosecco to drink whilst we waited!! We did see that as more people started to wait, they brought out a little table and put a massive slab of fontina cheese and a bowl of fresh broad bean pods for people to munch on - now thats service!
The menu was varied, and we took our time to choose. In the end we both went for antipasto to start, my friend had a mixture which was prosciutto, salame, salame piccante, roasted courgette and aubergine and a big piece of parmigiano! I just went for three slices of prosciutto and the cheese ;-)
For main, my friend had rigatoni carbonara with a side salad, it looked lovely and she said it tasted great. I went for the old favourite of spaghetti aglio, olio and pepperoncino. It was truly epic, probably one of the best plates of pasta I have had in Italy. I have added a picture so you can see how pretty it looked.
Dessert was tiramisu for her and a bowl of fresh srawberries for me.
In total the bill was around Euro 50 including water and a mezzo litro of vino bianco della casa.
Visit this place if you can. All were friendly and we were not rushed at all.
A proper family affair!

“Lamb with Potatoes - excellent!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 12, 2013

We found this restaurant in our guidebook and wasn't disappointed. Admittedly the service is a little slow, but the food is excellent. I had lamb with potatoes and was expecting a a small portion, but it was practically half a lamb on a plate with a large helping of thyme roasted potatoes, which were melt in the mouth.

My Husband is French and knows a good restaurant from a bad one and he insisted we make a second visit which we did. The only downside is that you have to get there early to secure a table (around 8pm), and the house red is a little rough around the edges - the Chianti, however, is excellent.

“Thank you, Paolo!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 2, 2013

Our Roman host, Mr. Philippe, introduced us to Antica Taverna and we had our first meal in Rome here. Pasta dishes are fantastic, and prices are nice for the traveler's wallet. Service was friendly, if slow, which was okay by me--if you can't slow down on vacation, when can you?

“Disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2013

We saw long queues of patiently waiting tourists every time we passed the Antica Taverna and hence deemed ourselves lucky when we finally managed to secure a table one evening during our four-day stay in Rome. It turned out, however, to be a very disappointing dinner experience. Once seated the waiters simply ignored us and we had to ask them several times to come over to our table. The food, when it finally did arrive, was less than mediocre - the fish was far too salty, the vegetables barely lukewarm, the pecorino and prosciutto of poor quality. No change was returned. We will avoid the Antica Taverna in future!
