“Amazing”

Definitely worth going to see!! The whole area is so gorgeous, there's a lovely walk up to the monastry and then when you go through to the actual cave it's quite breathtaking!

“Fascinating Sight”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2011

We had read a little on the Montagna Spacata sight so were excited to see it for ourselves whe we anchored off Gaeta. We walked to the Sancuary from the old harbor which took about 20 minutes. There are 2 splits that can be explored. The first is the path down to the crucifix chapel. There is no fee, but you can leave an offering. Down this path is the sight where an un believing turkish sailor said, "if this is true (referring to the split in the rock occuring at the moment Jesus was crucified) let this rock turn to water." A smooth and now deep hand print is in the rock at that place. A few feet further is the chapel of the crucifix. We found the sight spiritually moving.

The second split that can be explored is Turks grotto, and for a euro, you can scale 250+ steps down to the sea. We had the grotto all to ourselves at 10:00 AM.

The sanctuary is modest, but picturesque and there are good views of the beach of Gaeta and very clean and free facilities just past the gift shop.

“A lovely day, and a little workout!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2009

It was believed that this mountain split in two when Jesus was crucified. It is also said that, not believing the legend, a Turk man placed his hand on the split mountain and the rock melted around it.

You can go down where the moutain split (it sometimes gets very narrow) with steep stairs, to be greated by the lovely view of the sea. A little chapel built in the 1400's ''hangs over'' the sea, between the massives pieces of rock.
