“I've stayed here several times”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2013

I have stayed at this family run hotel 3 times and would stay again as I have always felt welcome and safe. Accomodation is basic and so are the services on offer, but the beds are comfortable and all rooms have a balcony. There is a lot of traffic noise as the hotel stands on a junction with roads on both sides. However I doubt that anywhere in Pompeii would be quiet re road noise. The degli Amici itself is peaceful; I've never been disturbed by other guests. There is plenty of breakfast; always a lot of fresh fruit, fresh croissants, tomamtoes, ommlette or hard boiled eggs as well as the things mentioned in the other reviews, so you won't have to eat the same thing every day. There is a coffee shop across the street and lots of restaurants nearby. The family do almost everything including waiting up for guests at night so let them know if you plan to be out late. Breakfast is between 8 and 10 but they have always arranged it earlier for me.

I use the degli Amici when I am working on a nearby archaeological dig. Colleagues stay in a variety of other local hotels and have far more complaints than I do about the degli Amici.

We chose this hotel because there were 7 of us and this was competitively priced. Whilst I am aware that you get what you pay for, any person looking at this hotel may need to know a few things. The photographs show the hotel at it`s best, the reality is a little different. The hotel owners are polite, but only just and not very helpful. The rooms are adequate but basic and a little drab. Breakfast is uninspiring, every day there are rolls, prepacked croissants, cheese and salami. I like coffee with breakfast but got frothy milk with a coffee smell and When I asked for tea or coffee any other time of day I was frowned upon. I was happy to pay for it but it was not available. The location is OK but there are nicer spots a few minutes walk away. Before you book this hotel, make sure you have made some comparisons, I would not book again.

We picked this hotel as it was reasonably priced and perfectly located. Easy access using the train to all the places we wanted to visit...Napoli, Sorrento, Vesuvius & Ercolano.
The hotel is reasonably priced - you get what you pay for. The rooms are clean but basic. The communal areas have character and build up your expectation of the standard of the rooms. They are a little jaded.
Breakfast is included in the price of the room. It is adequate - rolls, packaged croissants, cheese, ham, tomatoes, yoghurts, cereal.
Our biggest bug bear was that we were not able to have a coffee or tea, apart from at breakfast. Only one cup is offered then. A couple of times, we went down to ask during the early evening, but were told, 'No coffee or tea.....whisky?' There is no where local to purchase hot drinks. A travel kettle would be a good idea!
The staff are polite, but not particularly friendly or 'forthcoming'.
This hotel suited us for our purposes, but would not visit again.

Room Tip: All rooms have a balcony.

Fantastic location for a visit to Pompeii ruins. The rooms are small and modestly furnished. Ours overlooked the street and we had quite a bit of noise at night. The staff didn't seem very interested in their guests and failed to tell us that the next morning was a religious festival involving a noisy parade with a band at 4.30am! The new town of Pompei has nothing to recommend it - it's quite ugly and there are very few places to eat out. Breakfast was quite good.

Room Tip: Ask for one away from the road

Good location between the two entrances to Pompeiii.

Fair facilities in reasonable sized rooms.
Could do with minor maintenance being done.

Reasonably acommodating staff but not the most helpful at times.

No restaurant on site but not really a problem as there are a lot of restaurants/cafes around.

Breakfast minimalistic.

Hotel Degli Amici is only good as a stop over hotel and nothing more. The entire hotel needs an update. We stayed in a triple room & there was no where to even put our luggage without tripping over it. The room was just ok, the bathroom was old & looked dirty. The shower size was average. The door to the bathroom was an accordian piece of plastic. We checked in at night and the roll of toilet paper was 3/4 used with no extra roll in the bathroom. Good thing I brought travel toilet paper with me because we had to use it the next morning before we checked out.

Breakfast was bad. The worst we had all throughout Italy. Crossiants were out of a package, not much fruit selection, coffee was tolerable. All the food was pre-packaged except for the rolls, they were good. The staff was not very friendly except for the girl with the brunette hair, she was very nice and helpful.

This was a great hotel for a visit to the Pompeii ruins. We saw Herculaneum (Ercolano) from here too. The hotel was nice, good rooms - the quad was surprisingly comfortable for a family of 4 that included 2 large teenage boys. Most, if not all rooms have a tiny sort of balcony and the air conditioning worked well. The bathroom was quite spacious.
The hotel is about 1/2 way between the front and back entrances of the ruins. Go in the back way - no crowds. Be careful of the guides though - one with excellent English talked us into a tour, then handed us off to someone whose English was only fair and who left us in the middle of the ruins. We ended up doing fine on our own and having a great time, so all was good in the end.

We recommend the Resturant Sanctuario too - after a long day in the ruins, the service and the food were wonderful, and the garden was cool and comfortable.
