Staved here for three nights in november, well kept hotel with very friendly staff, good breakfast, just across the road from the railway station. 200- 300m from the ruins in a nice part of the town, couldn't fault it

We booked hotel Palma the day before arrival, purely because of it's proximity to the ruins. The rooms were very nice and clean, although some of the windows were so high up you couldn't see out of them....The staff were very friendly (they even drove round town to find us when we got lost upon arrival) and the food was excellent. There were a couple of powercuts while we were there, but they were fixed very quickly! We did hear some of the staff arguing quite loudly a couple of times, but it didn't really affect our holiday. The location is very good for the ruins, although Pompeii itself is not the nciest town in the world (having said that though, the hotel is still in a good location). Regarding a previous review...it is common for hotels in Italy to take passports off of all of the guests. This is perfectly normal. Also, the metal shutters on the windows are to stop the heat, so the rooms don't get too hot (Pompeii is VERY warm). They have nothing to do with safety.

Hotel Palma had everything to make our stay very enjoyable: great location (within walking distance of restaurants, the Scavi and opposite one of the Santuario station), friendly staff (even if some are struggling with their English), good breakfast buffet (especially if you like cakes!), a large room with working aircon, a good sized bathroom and even our own little balcony, free wifi, a computer in the lounge and a jacuzzi and sunbeds on the rooftop! The only thing we were missing was English channels on the TV. We were initially booked for 4 nights but as we liked it so much and it was so easy to get to Naples from there, we decided to extend our stay by another 2 nights (instead of staying in Naples). We would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to visit Pompeii.

We had been booked in to another place in the old pompeii but the hotel was having water problems , we got taken to Hotel Palme and we were so pleased it was a very pleasant hotel right in the middle of town , we could walk to restaurants, the little stalls and the piazza with the church was right there and of course the ruins on easy walking distance. We only had breakfasts there which were excellent lots of choices but u could have all meals there if u wanted to. A very quaint family run it , lovely furniture

First of all I must say that reviewer "allcontinents4" is describing a different Hotel Palma!

This is the second year that we have stayed here and it is a superb hotel.

The location is perfect, the Pompeii Santuaria Circumvesuviana station is directly opposite. You fall out of the hotel into the station, plus the centre of Pompei life in Piazza Bartolo Longo, is less than 5 minutes walk away.

I cannot make any comment on all the rooms in the hotel because we have not stayed in all of them, but last year our room was very good and this year our room was excellent, spacious, airy, great views, large ensuite and plenty of fresh bed linen and towels (not frayed!).

When it comes to the reception staff, two we knew from last year but there were a couple of fresh faces. All were very friendly, quietly efficient, more than helpful when you needed it and spoke perfectly good English.

I suggest that people like "allcontinents4" learn a little Italian, there are plenty of websites around so make the effort.

All the other staff were very friendly and their knowledge of English varied but was always more than adequate and acceptable.

Breakfasts were superb, a typical Italian buffet type which really sets you up for the day.

The breakfast girls were very good, replacing anything which had run out and catering for differing coffees and, if you wanted, tea.

After a day's sightseeing there is a superb jacuzzi on the roof, you have just got to use it.

If you allow it, the staff here make you feel like friends, not mere guests.

It is difficult to describe Hotel Palma other than in superlatives and it fully deserves it's 4 star status

Next year will be our 4th year in Campania and we wil be returning to Hotel Palma because it is such a great place to use as a base for the whole region.

If I have not convinced you by now to stay at this hotel, I never will, but you will be missing something special

We stayed one night to visit the ruins - expected a 4-star hotel and got much less. The lights in the lobby were turned off giving it a cave-like feel. The reception desk staff spoke little English and had to ask the bellman to translate. I was asked for passports for all 4 of us, including my children, and was told to come back for them later - a bit sketchy. I sent my family up to the room to wait for the passports. The couple that checked in after me also handed over their 2 passports - only received one back. After much discussion, the second passport was finally found.

The room was old, tired and barely passable. The wallpaper was peeling, the throw rugs were dirty with hair and lint, the linens were torn and thin, the pillows were beyond disgusting - all lumpy and hard, and it smelled of stale cigarette smoke. The air-conditioning only worked when you were in the room (because you had to place the key in a slot to turn the electricity on) - made for a very uncomfortable hour before the room cooled down at all. The windows had steel grates on them that you had to wind up. Gives you an idea of how unsafe the area is. The elevator is slow and questionable how safe it is as it drops before it goes up and shakes too much. The walls were also thin, allowing us to hear everything happening in the hallway and room next door.

The rooftop deck had the possibility of being great - however, all over there were ashtrays filled with cigarettes and ashes, smelled of the cigarettes and the jacuzzi did not work. It was generally dirty - looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a few days.

Pompeii was the only place in Italy that I felt unsafe. It was helpful to have parking right in front of the hotel so we did not have to worry about our car.

The owner/manager of the hotel has anger-management problems. He was observed screaming on the phone and at the staff. When my son went to sit in a wooden chair near the computer, the owner came over yelling. It turns out the chair was old and rickety and he didn't want it used - why do you have a chair in the lobby that can't be sat in??

We should have stayed in Rome and made a day trip to the ruins and skipped the pick-pocketers and icky hotel in Pompeii.
