We visited Pompeii for the day on a coach trip from Rome (not too expensive). Travel there was a couple of hours each way, with a drink / toilet stop each way. We wanted to explore the city on our own, so did not book a tour guide, but we did have a map etc - we just walked and explored. The site uncovered today is massive and there is loads remaining to be excavated and explored. We loved just being able to walk amongst the ruins, explore, read and photograph such a site - again, such history; it is a shame that a umber of artefacts found are not on display, but behind gates stored on shelving - they could make so much more of the place - but do not let this detract from what is a truly fascinating place to visit. Hint - wear comfortable shoes as it is all cobbles. Great place to visit, highly recommended.
