“Very nice hotel, perfect location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2014

I just returned from Pompeii, we stayed at the Hotel Forum. The staff couldn't have been nicer, and more helpful. We arrived earlier than check in, they set everything up for us, held our luggage and brought it up to the room when the room was ready while we went to see the ruins. What a perfect location, just steps away from the entrance to the ruins, and Convenient to restaurants etc. Older hotel with modern Conveniences.

I have been a guest at the Hotel Forum on four previous holidays at Pompeii. The building and grounds are very clean and well cared for. Lemon trees and flowers adorn the yard and garden areas of the hotel. From the moment I arrived I was made to feel welcome and at home. My room was very clean, well appointed and the bed, large and very comfortable. From the balcony of my room I enjoyed splendid views of the present day town of Pompei, the ruins across the street and Mount Vesuvius in the distance. The location of the hotel is perfect and provides one with easy access to the entrance to the ruins of Pompeii, the train station and local shops and services. It is quite safe for one to enjoy a pleasant walk in the area at any time of the day or night. There is a contemporary dining room below stairs with a pleasant relaxing atmosphere. A traditional Italian breakfast consisting of bread, rolls and cakes is served each morning. From 17:30 to 22:00 dinner is available which consists of a selection of fine wines and a variety of delectable regional dishes and desserts. The staff are extremely polite, helpful and friendly people, ( In particular Marika, Valentina and Gaetano at reception and Elena and Anna from the dining room.) Each request and, or enquiry was attended to quickly and with a smile. The hotel is currently undergoing renovations, however the construction team begins work at 0830 and finishes at 1730 except at the weekend when no work continues. The noise and inconvenience is kept to a minimum for the courtesy of the guests so I for one was not bothered during my recent stay at the hotel. I look forward to future stays at this hotel.

Good location, opposite the entry to the Roman Ruins at Pompei.

Accessing the reception is a challenge, down a lane jammed full of tradesmens vans; help with parking and baggage would be expected at this price, but was not forthcoming. However, free parking is in a good location nearby. Incredibly, there's no elevator to the three floors of front rooms - 'Superior' - facing the ruins and Vesuvius beyond. There's a 5 storey block at the back that has an elevator, but there were jack-hammers working on that part of the hotel so we stayed well clear!

Some parts of the hotel have been renewed and present very well - unfortunately not the guest rooms! The Superior we had featured terrible beds; poor erratic water pressure; ratty old furniture that belonged in Steptoe's Yard, it was a very tired old room with chips of plaster missing everywhere and peeling paint; there was a broken wall switch panel and holes in the wall where previous fittings had been removed!

The positives… The internet was good and stable. Some (not all) the front desk staff were very helpful.

Overall this is bad value presently; it's an old outdated hotel that is gradually being upgraded. They're charging the prices now for what you'll get sometime in the future. This place is a work in progress, wait until they've finished.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else!

I stayed there with my wife and grandson who has now visited the main 'classical centres' - Valley of the Kings, Ephesus, Rome and Athens - this trip almost completes his classical education.
A pleasant hotel, excellently sited just a few yards from the Amphitheatre entrance to the old City. At the time of my visit, undergoing some substantial room refurbishment, but our room was very good, with excellent beds. The hotel is very good value for money (as, much to my surprise) were most of the shops and cafes - certainly no tourist rip-off town ! The only downside was the Restaurant - food was OK but very basic and with little choice. There is a total lack of quality restaurants in Pompeii and it would seem to me with the situation and quality of this hotel (and of the dining room, which is very nice) a restaurant of decent quality would be an ideal addition, not only to the hotel, but to the town. Nevertheless, highly recommended.

Room Tip: So far as I could see, all the rooms looked good

Funny how different people's experiences can be at the same hotel. We stayed one night in mid-March during a bit of remodeling by the lobby (during the mid-day hours only). Everyone was extraordinarily nice and helpful. More than just the "usual" friendliness in helping with a place for dinner, and an afternoon bottle of wine in the little lobby/bar area, and ideas for sightseeing. It was all the smiles and anticipating our typical tourist issues (upon checking out in the morning, "Would you like to store your luggage while you visit the ruins?" - - and when we were the only ones in the lobby/bar having wine, bringing out plate after plate of different appetizers).
It either rained or drizzled during both days, so we didn't get to sit in the lovely garden. Hopefully, you will visit on a sunny day. The rooms were nothing special, the towels a bit thin, but all was just fine for us. Our room rate was quite modest compared to the bigger cities.

My partner is a wheelchair user so we booked the disabled room on the ground floor. There are three steps up to this but the hotel has portable ramps which provide a moderate incline so you will need an able bodied companion to provide a hefty shove on the ascent and brake on the descent. Be warned, the room is next to the reception so as a previous reviewer has commented, it can be a bit noisy. Fortunatly I take ear plugs whenever I am staying away from home so this didn't bother us too much. There was building work going on but the builders started and finished a reasonable time so there wasn't much disturbance. The accessible bathroom is quite well laid out but my partner commented that a extra grab rail by the toilet would have been useful.

None of the above detracted from our stay and the staff were wonderfully helpful, booking taxis, locating allen keys to do some running repairs to the freewheel on the wheelchair and even calling in at the station to check if the trains were accessible because the station staff's English was about as good as our Italian. The hotel is very close to the entrance to the ruins and with the freewheel fitted my partner was able to get to see a fair amount of the site despite the fact that it is not very wheelchair friendly. Entrance is free for wheelchair users and one companion so you can try two of the entrances and make multiple visits although the Porta Marina entrance which is furthest away from the hotel is a complete no go.

There is a lift and a ramp down to the restaurant and the hotel provides a lovlely breakfast but is let down by the food in the evening. When I order pasta in Italy I don't expect to hear the microwave go 'ting. I don't know whether this improves later in the season when there are more guests, let's hope so, because if it hadn't been for that one meal the hotel would have got five stars.

Room Tip: Disabled room 43 can be noisy - take earplugs

Hotel Forum was my perfect choice for 3 nights in Pompeii. I needed a hotel that would be convenient to transportation and the Ruins and comfortable for a solo woman. Hotel Forum absolutely was a great choice. Location is perfect as it's directly across from the entrance to the Ruins and close to several good restaurants. Very close to the trains station if you pick the right line from Naples (check hotel's website). Hotel staff is friendly and accommodating. My room overlooked the street as requested for a perfect view of Vesuvius, the Ruins and the neighborhood. If you need more quiet, you might ask for a room facing the courtyard. Breakfast was tasty and service excellent. As March is off season, it was a bit chilly to take full advantage of the garden. It’s beautiful anyway and I’m sure in will be wonderful in warmer weather. Hotel Forum is a great choice for any visit to the area.
