“Impressive Tour, Unimpressive Guide”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2014

Napoli Sotteranea is definitely something to see when visiting the downtown core, especially on torrid days as the tour provides a welcome respite from the searing heat of the city. The networks of cisterns, wells and (very) narrow passageways will interest young and old. A basic knowledge of the history of Naples is preferable to fully appreciate the tour. The tour is offered in several languages (at least Italian, English, and French). the cost is €10 per adult and lasts 1h30. Unfortunately for us, our guide (we took the tour in Italian) talked out of rote as a record, without emotion nor passion.

“Unexpectedly interesting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2014 via mobile

We took the tour on a Saturday and at first it seemed badly organised - not easy to get information, only way to pay is "on the door" and there was no booking, just turn up at the advertised time and then wait for your tour to leave. The tours are in French, Italian or (excellent) English, but I believe they are considering adding German soon. Once inside, they constantly keep count of you, as the tours cross each others' paths and you could theoretically follow the wrong group - so keep an eye on your group members. About 30 in our group.
It is quite cool down there but we managed with normal summer clothes. Best to wear flat shoes. There are lots of steps, some narrow squeezes (optional for the claustrophobic) and it's quite a long tour - but we didn't notice the time, it was so very fascinating and new.
Stories of ancient Greece, nuns and monks, well cleaners, bombings...and at the end, glimpses of a Roman theatre.

Definitely recommended.

“Informative and astounding”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2014

We hesitated about taking this tour:queues, time and the unknown. We were really glad to have taken the plunge. It is hard to believe while outside in the city of coffee, stalls, pizza, buildings and roller coaster taxis that this vibrant city suffered 28,000 bombs during WWII. I knew of the terrible state the locals suffered from family, where starvation hardly covers the dreadful suffering, but had no knowledge of this underground world.
This tour will inform, surprise and perhaps give a greater appreciation of the city. I not tell you everything, not to ruin the trip but if you are claustrophobic, there is one small part you may want to sit out of, that said, it is manageable, but check your own tolerance!
This is a tour of 3 parts, the subterranean part being the longest section. This will take you back 5000 years, and is an impressive time check on a timeless city!

“Cool”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2014

Excellent for the children, especially when they give you a lit candle to carry and take you through walk ways that are so narrow. This is not for the claustrophobic or anyone who is on the rotund size; you have to walk sideways through some of the very narrow passageways. Fun to do.
