We (three women) booked the Hotel Il Convento at the recommendation of an acquaintance familar with Naples. We planned a 9 day stay and were offered a special rate of 135 Euros for one of their "junior suites" which sleeps "up to" four. The website said that guests would be charged for the entire time they reserved even if they checked out early. When I wrote and told them that I wasn't comfortable with that, they offered to charge us only one night extra should we check out before the 9 days we reserved.
I booked the reservation with that understanding.
The hotel is located in the Spanish Quarter of Naples, only 2 blocks off the main shopping streets of Via Toledo. This is the oldest part of Naples: ancient buildings, narrow streets down which Vespas speed, vendors sell their wares and cars squeeze around pedestrians. It's a fascinating area and most people we encountered here were courteous and even friendly.
We were told by a native Neapolitan that it was a safe enough area in the day time provided we didn't wear expensive watches or jewelry, but not to go out walking the neighborhood at night.
The hotel door is kept locked at all times. They buzz you in.
It is lovely inside and very well kept. Our suite was located on the street side with a narrow balcony. about 10 feet across the alley was another ancient building with balconies above and across from ours. The noise from passing Vespas and neighboring apartments went on into the wee hours.
We did not feel safe leaving the balcony doors open at night while we slept, and that was the only source of ventilation. When we asked about air conditioning we were told it wasn't time yet for air conditioning. They did bring us a fan. However two of the single beds were located on the narrow "mezzanine" above the other double bed and bathroom.
After two uncomfortable nights, (and I can confirm that they do indeed stock their rooms with earplugs) we threw in the towel and told the desk clerk we would be staying only one more night.
The next day, after we returned from a sightseeing trip, the woman who appears to be in charge of the hotel greeted me like a child being scoldedy, saying that she had something to tell me.
She told me we would have to stay for 9 days or else we would have to pay for our suite at the rate of 160 Euros a night rather than the special rate of 135 Euros they offer for a stay of more than 8 days, and we would also have to pay the one day cancellation fee.
When I told her that wasn't fair and that wasn't what our agreement was she simply yelled louder. I finally told her to do what she had to do. We paid 160 Euros for the three nights we stayed there and 160 Euros for their cancellation fee.
We checked out, found a cheaper hotel in a safer area where we could walk at night, enjoyed the many charms of this culturally rich but troubled city and chalked this one up to experience.
Lesson: If a hotel tells you you can't check out without paying a penalty, think twice about booking there. There's a reason they do that.
