After climbing a long flight of steps from the piazza I spoke with 2 men at the front door of this church. In Italian they explained this was not the church I was seeking but I could go through and out the narthex door, avoiding the long staircase, but by the way, the other church was closed because it was Tuesday. After some pleasantries I barely understood (I don't speak Italian) I was led in and left to explore the church and exit on the other side. Its beauty and the kindliness of its people made up for missing the church I sought originally. In Italy you get used to having all the things you wanted to see closed, and being thankful because the substitute experiences are even more memorable.
